"I Know Where I Stand": Taonga Leslie on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Age of Trump

Welcome to The Free Ranger, a podcast about telling the stories that matter. On this podcast, we’ll be learning about storytelling from the people who turn important issues into stories: the writers, filmmakers, marketers, academics, and other professionals who weave together the facts to create compelling narratives that make a difference. On this episode, we’re diverting from our usual format a bit to talk about an important issue: DEI. We’re happy to welcome Taonga Leslie, Director of Policy and Program for Racial Justice at the American Constitution Society. A graduate of Yale Law School and Harvard University, Taonga was previously a senior consultant with Public Equity Group, a boutique consulting firm that helps nonprofits, foundations and other social impact groups develop strategic plans to advance racial and economic justice. He has also served as an associate with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where he represented asylum seekers, survivors of domestic violence, nonprofit arts organizations, and police accountability groups. Together, we talked about the long history of debates around equity in the US; where DEI stands today; and how institutions can stand by their DEI commitments in the coming years. "Loved Before It Exists": Robert Rose on AI and the Creative Process

This week, we’re thrilled to welcome author and content marketing strategy consultant Robert Rose. Robert is the chief strategy advisor to the Content Marketing Institute and founder of The Content Advisory, a consulting firm working with global brands to co-create pragmatic content strategy plans. He is the author of three books including the best-selling Managing Content Marketing, and has been a featured keynote speaker and workshop teacher at technology and marketing events around the world. Together, we got deep on what it means to be a creative in the age of AI; how to cope on an emotional and existential level when it feels like tech is always coming for the things you love to do; and how to find joy in creative work even as the activities involved in that work change over time . . .

Season 3, Episode 2: The Skinless Analyst (ft. Betsy Cohen)

Now more than ever, it’s important for us to know the man behind the concept—both his accomplishments and his shortcomings. We’re thrilled to welcome Jungian analyst and writer Dr. Betsy Cohen. Dr. Cohen is the author of “Jung’s Personal Confession,” an article exploring Jung’s extramarital affairs, and the often unacknowledged impact these relationships had on his work. Together, we talked about Jung’s personal life, the relationship between patient and therapist, and the importance of vulnerability for human growth . . .

Season 3, Episode 1: The Post-Jungians (ft. Andrew Samuels)

This season, we’ll be speaking with experts on Carl Jung—the Swiss psychiatrist who developed the concept of “archetypes.” Archetypes are patterns that pop up again and again in the stories of a given culture. In recent years, books like Margaret Mark and Carol S. Pearson’s The Hero and the Outlaw have popularized the idea that brands can use archetypes in their own marketing materials. At the same time, Jung and his work have come under scrutiny, as critics have wrestled with the racism and sexism evident in his writings. Now more than ever, it’s important for us to know the man behind the concept—both his accomplishments and his shortcomings. We’re happy to welcome Jungian analyst, psychoanalyst, and writer Dr. Andrew Samuels. Dr. Samuels is the author of Jung and the Post-Jungians, a collection of essays exploring how today’s psychoanalysts are grappling with Jung’s legacy. Together, we talked about Jungian analysis, the dangers of essentialism, and the importance of difference, in and out of therapy . . .

Season 2, Episode 3: The Philosophy of Marketing Ethics (ft. Heather Salazar)

This season, we’ll be speaking with experts on Marketing Ethics—the moral principles that guide us as we tell stories about products, services, and organizations, and how to make sure we’re putting those principles into practice. We’re happy to welcome Heather Salazar, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Western New England University. Heather’s research focuses on the nature, origin, and force of our obligations to ourselves and others, exploring the concept of enlightened self-interest from both Western and Eastern perspectives. She is the author of Creating a Shared Morality, a book discussing the potential of neo-Kantian ethical constructivism as an ethical framework for our modern world. She is also the co-editor of Mind Over Matter, a collection of essays on the spiritual dimension of human achievement. In our discussion, Heather shared her thoughts on the Nikola scandal, the value of multiple ethical frameworks in marketing and business, and the importance of remembering what truly matters when we’re faced with tough ethical choices… -- Links Etc.
