LLP#069 - Money on my Mind : Healing our Relationship with Money Part 1

Did you ever find yourself in a heated conversation involving money? We definitely have… And we found that many times our throats tightened, our jaws clenched, our breathing became shallower and our heart rate rose… For others, it might be the opposite, completely tuning out with glassy eyes and feeling increasingly distant from what is happening… Does any of this feel familiar?  So maybe just take a moment to ask yourself, what is money for me? Is it just a number on a piece of paper that we can use to exchange for stuff we want?  If it was, then we wouldn’t be either so attached, or detached from it. Ask yourself again, do you feel comfortable talking about money with your parents, your siblings, your friends, your peers, strangers?  As the audio clip from the critically acclaimed TV show Mad Men illustrates, there’s something more than meets the eye about money. Something that either gets us to avoid the topic altogether even when our world is going down in flames, or to get super emotional about it. And that’s why it’s high time we started talking about money, and our relationship with it, right here, in the Liku-Liku Podcast. Enjoy. LLP#068 - Behind the Curtain of Mental Health Support Work with Melanie Yap Part 2

Do you ever wonder what made you who you currently are? Was it mostly your genes, or your upbringing? Or was it the people you ended up mingling with? A worthwhile topic for contemplation, and one not easy to answer conclusively with a generic blanket statement! So we do this work of discovery here, relating with real people. Previously on the Liku-Liku Podcast, we talked to Melanie Yap, a volunteer with a mental and emotional support group in Sabah (Malaysia) about the story of her life, growing up being the elder sibling. Melanie quickly took on the mantle of being a caretaker for almost everyone around her: for her brother upon her parents’ divorce, the different groups she joined in school, her friends… And that must have somehow led her to volunteering with a mental health support group, what do you think? You can listen to the whole story in Part 1 of her interview. But mainly, what Melanie wants to talk about is the lack of the same care and support for mental health workers and volunteers in their organization, including stigmatization. Have you recently had the chance to be on the receiving end of an open hearted exchange in which you felt heard and seen? These experiences can do wonders to relieve our ever-increasing stress levels. And yet, we often don't even think about the other person when we're absorbed in our painful experiences. By now, the topic of mental health has become so widely spoken, which is a good thing, but it's also very much focused on those suffering from mental health and no focus at all on those providing the mental health care and support. Honestly, I don't think we even think about it. How mental health workers and supporters are also human and therefore have their mental health to deal with too. This is a very subtle topic, as it is obviously not the responsibility of the person receiving mental health care to listen to their professional caregivers. That's why we are excited to share with you this conversation we had with Melanie Yap, who is a volunteer with a mental health support organization in Sabah. There's a lot to unpack, but for this first part, let's hear about Melanie's background from being raised in a divorced parents environment and how that shapes her outlook of the world as she grows older and more. Does it ever feel to you like Life’s some kind of cruel game whose rules are unknown, unclear and unfair? Like some kind of Battle Royale a la Squid Games in which we are all somehow pitted against one another striving for our individual survival at the expense of everyone else’s? Well, that is somehow weaved into the narrative that we consciously or unconsciously choose to tell ourselves, in this game of Truth or Consequences. And seeing where we are and where we are headed, it seems that despite Truth being at the core of many of our beliefs and pillars of our society (Justice, Science, Religion, etc), it appears we haven’t been so good at the game and are facing dire Consequences… And yet, if we clearly lay out the map of how things are, we can see that it may not be an entirely inescapable fate, and that there is hope yet to achieve the true potential of humanity’s unique abilities. Do you remember ever being part of a shouting match (as a rebellious teenager or perhaps the parent on the other side) involving a "You're going to tell me the truth right now!" quickly followed by a "... Or ELSE??!!!". We definitely can relate, as it is, for better or worse, one of the games that we human beings can't seem to quit playing... Truth or Consequences, which we named this episode after, is not only a TV game but it's also the name of a town in the US, and a phrase that describes the lifestyle that many people around the world have chosen to live by. It represents the shattered dreams, lofty goals and golden aspirations of our forefathers that were based on the ideals adopted from their leaders. However, these ideals have resulted in a short-sighted vision for Humanity, leaving a struggling to deny our shadows and realize our shortcomings. As a result, we are left with a lifetime of work to find the truth within ourselves and shed light on the path of our own redemption and Healing. In this week's episode, we will explore the concept of Truth or Consequences and delve deeper into its implications for our lives.
