Your capacity to take on the news right now is valid. Your mental, physical, and emotional boundaries are your own—no one else's are the same. Yet we tend to feel shame and guilt when it comes to how much we feel we are able to engage (or not) with the general sense of suffering out there in the world. So how do we identify what OUR personal boundaries are for engaging with current global crises? And how do we locate, let alone honour, those boundaries when we've blown right the f*ck past them? Today's episode goes into just this question. We'll honour the importance of bearing witness to others' suffering and global crises while honouring YOUR limits so you're not just (re)traumatizing yourself in the name of being a "good global citizen." We'll discuss how to locate YOUR mental, emotional, and physical boundaries—that is, how to FEEL them when they announce themselves, and what to do so you can honour them. We'll cover how to "reset" when you've gone WAY beyond your boundaries and are living in a near-constant state of nervous system dysregulation/fight-flight response/survival mode (all terms for the same state). We discuss why it's CRUCIAL to honour your boundaries even in the face of self-recrimination and self-judgement, and what to do with those sneaky feelings of guilt and shame that can arise when we choose to take care of ourselves though others are suffering. Breakdowns, crises, disappointments. Bereavements, tragedies, and disillusionments. Burnouts, births, marriages, and life-defining accomplishments.  Why is it that on the other side of a Big Life Event, good or bad, chosen or accidental, we most often feel completely lost—and irrevocably different?  Today’s episode investigates western overculture’s obsession with a certain kind of life trajectory, and how this idea of our life’s “shape” is not only inherently false, but deeply damaging to the psyche. In contrast, ancient and Indigenous cultures that embrace significant milestones and experiences in life as rites of passage experience a great deal less existential angst and mental suffering.  In episode 7 we get into the three stages of a rite of passage, and explore how we can navigate the discomfort and pain that often accompanies these transitional, transformational phases in life, in which we often feel as though we have lost ourselves and all ability to feel clear and/or confident of what we’re doing in life, in a way that lessens our suffering—and actually increases the potential of what we can achieve on the other side of the experience.       Want to discuss how you can work with me?
