314th Airlift Wing History & Heritage
In 1968, the "Year of Shock" in Vietnam, the difference between life and death for besieged US Marines was a 40-foot aluminum tube: the C-130 Hercules. But to the troops on the ground, these vital aircraft were known as "Mortar Magnets" for the intense enemy fire they drew upon landing. This episode tells the incredible true stories of two 314th Tactical Airlift Wing C-130 crews who flew into the heart of the storm. Follow Lt. Col. Howard Dallman as his crew battles a raging fire inside their aircraft at Khe Sanh, right next to the base's main ammunition dump. Then, witness the iron will of Lt. Col. William Boyd, who, after seeing another C-130 shot down, pushes his aircraft to its absolute limit to evacuate over 100 souls from the overrun camp at Kham Duc. This is the story of the truck drivers of the sky and their cargo cult of valor.
