Members Reviews: I really enjoyed this book I really enjoyed this book, it has a good story, easy to read and I liked the writing style. The characters were likeable and relatable, and the subject thought provoking. It felt like true story, something happening anywhere and everywhere in the world today. I also liked the way Maya sees the world as through a movie reel, capturing every memory as a film image. Read and review free copy. Beautiful incredible moving I love this book with every part of my heart. It made me cry on an airplane. I love the beauty in the writing, the voice and the suspense. Such an important and intensely readable book. I finished in one sitting. Highly recommend. 3.5 âMore #OwnVoicesâ Stars I wanted to love this book, but I ended up having problems that I can only describe as a âIt isnât You, Itâs Meâ sort of thing. First, let me just say that this book made me feel a lot of thingsâthey were not all good, but feelings are feelings, and lately not a lot of stories have managed to give me that. During the first half, I mostly went from really liking the voice to getting my hopes up with the romance to getting annoyed by the romance and the protagonist (Maya). Anyone who knows me is aware I will hardly ever complain about a book being romance-focused, but in this case, the romance didnât work for me at all. Thereâs a love triangle for a few chapters, but it doesnât last. My problem, though, is that this triangle only served to introduce a character I liked as a LI a lot more than Mayaâs pick. For me, the author gave Kareem, the Indian guy who gets all Mayaâs jokes and references, a lot more personality than she gave Phil, the white guy Maya has had a crush on since forever. The first scenes between Maya and Kareen had chemistry and built a connection that the rest of the book didnât achieve for Maya and Phil. Honestly, Iâm still wondering why Maya liked Phil in the first place. What was so appealing about him other than the fact that Maya seemed to make it her lifeâs mission to like everything her parents disapproved of? Phil wasnât a remarkable enough character and the two of them seemed to have no common interests beside him teaching her to swim. And, the most important thing of all (for me, at least), Phil was taken. Yes, Phil had a girlfriend, not that Phil or Maya seemed to care too much about it. I honestly donât understand why the author chose this specific âobstacleâ for the romance.

Members Reviews: Charming & funny & so cute Charming and funny and gahhhh so cute. I really enjoyed how Rachael Allen looked at disability through Spencer's POV (his Tourette's is just a part of him), but I also really liked how his family doesn't make a huge deal out of it (I loved that his older jock-y brother especially did not). I also REALLY appreciated the frank discussion of interracial relationships and racism, and Confederate flag dinner conversation (in which their school bans anything w/the flag on it). I giggled at the Pumpkin Spice Latte references and Hamilton sing-alongs. I appreciated that Spencer was into sports and science and that he grew into himself. Aghhhhh, what a sweet little dork. What I Liked: I'd heard great things about this book, and while I'm not a YA contemporary fan (definitely not a tough-issue contemporary person), I was curious enough to want to know more about it. This book broke my heart in many ways, but it was really and truly inspiring and hopeful. It wasn't an easy read but it was a meaningful one, and I'm glad I took a chance on it. This book begins when Spencer is 13 years old, and his new neighbors are moving in. That is when he meets Hope. He likes Hope immediately; she is nice, fun, and she doesn't think he is a weirdo because of his Tourette Syndrome tics and sniffs.

Gives a voice to a sexuality that is often silenced. After finishing Just Juliet roughly 3 days ahead of schedule, I have to give the book credit where credit is due. Itâs an easy read, grounded in reality and creating positive messages that donât often get taught. It tackled the half-gay term that often gets claimed for bisexuals really well and it stayed true to the characters sexuality. It gave me a lot of insight to bisexuality as a whole and I appreciate that inclusivity as someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community. I actually want my friend - who is a bisexual - to read it so we can discuss a couple of topics within the book and thatâs something that you really canât take for granted. The fact that it can be a tool for these discussions means it has a valuable place in the LGBTQ+ community and that should be appreciated. This is the first book Iâve read that is specifically LGBT inclusive. Here are a couple of thoughts that have come of this book: - I dislike romance as a genre. Itâs hard for me to get into the whole âmy whole life is about one single person and nothing elseâ concept. I think Iâm probably a bit tainted for this concept due to my experience with this turning so very toxic. It just makes me really uncomfortable when I read it and yet itâs in just about every single book I read. â - This book probably isnât intended for my generation (the 90âs kids) but it definitely has a few nods to us. I canât tell if thats because this is a book written by a woman who was born in the same generation or if it was something that was done on accident. Either way, it adds a flavor that I can appreciate. â - The characters are very well grounded in reality. I enjoyed that they felt like real people, even beyond their relationship. The author definitely has a talent in creating characters that are tangible. - This book was really, really, really fluffy and I loved every minute of that fluff. Itâs not often we see LGBTQ+ characters have a safe place in books and this book definitely creates a safe place without sacrificing the struggles the people in this community goes through. Although it was DEFINITELY tipped towards the fluffy end of the scale, I felt the author did a good job balancing the description of the struggles the characters went through and creating that safe space. â - This book makes me excited to explore more of the LGBTQ+ literature. Iâm really happy that this is the first book Iâve decided to read in this genre. â - I recommend this book for anybody who is starting out in this genre, as well as anybody who might have questions about their own sexuality.

Although the main character is at times a twit, teens will readily identify with him. In the desert city of Madison, Nevada, each person upon reaching their 18th birthday , enters the âwishing caveâ and makes a wish. Think carefully and pronounce your wish correctly because it will come true just as you speak it. Some ask for money, some love, some a long time desire, but they all come true. Eldonâs birthday is quickly approaching. What will he ask for? What would YOU ask for? How will it affect the rest of your life? Tragedy, morality, selfishness, altruism and more are touched on as Eldonâs Wish Day comes ever closer. Friendship, family, love, despair, happiness, contentment are topics easily discussed after reading this charmingly written book. Adults will appreciate the questions and wonder about their answers as well. 4 of 5 stars I would have so screwed up my one wish I love the concept of this story, and I can feel this town existing out in the desert. The idea of getting one wish that will come true, especially when you're so young, is scary. The wish I would've made when I was 18 would not have ended well for me. And seeing teens making these choices that determine their entire lives, choices many will live to regret, is so realistic. Of course it mirrors the fact that in reality teens do make big choices that set their lives on a certain course, and it's so great to see the mc grapple with the choice of what he should wish for, to research all the wishes people in the town have made over the years, to see all the regret along with the people who found contentment. To see him be afraid to make a choice. I know I was terrified at 18 about making the wrong choice, or that I'd already made the wrong choice and my life was irredeemable. I love that this book looks at all those big ideas. I know my 8th graders will get a lot out of it and be drawn into the wishing world.
