The Sutherland Lecture seeks to platform significant research that speaks prophetically to local churches, pastors, and scholars involved in Baptist life in Aotearoa. This year, Martin Sutherland presents ‘Kept apart by creeds: The 1923 Act of Incorporation in the context of division’. His lecture explores what divides us and why we’re still together. Asking those ‘Big Bite’ questions about how we handle difference and reflecting on the Act of Incorporation and what that means in our constitutional basis all comes into this story… Note: This episode was recorded at the Sutherland Lecture breakfast at the Baptist National Hui 2023 and includes Q&A at the end (low audio quality).

The Sutherland Lecture 2022

The Sutherland Lecture seeks to platform significant research that speaks prophetically to local churches, pastors, and scholars involved in Baptist life in Aotearoa. This year’s Sutherland Lecture was focused on the theme of “Telling Stories” and featured three contributors: Dr Laura Schilperoort, Rāwiri Auty, and Sarah Rice. In the Lecture, they each explore how the narratives we tell—biblical, historical, cultural, and theological—shape who we become and who we imagine ourselves to be. The Lecture was emceed by Caleb Haurua, committee member for Baptist Research and History.
