Beyond the Uniform: From Marine to Mentor with Dr. Karla Guevara

(Recorded as Candid Conversations)Dr. Karla Guevara is a Marine Corps veteran, educator, and leader whose career reflects resilience, service, and a deep commitment to uplifting others. She spent 5 years in the United States Marine Corps, where she learned to lead with discipline, humility, and an unwavering sense of purpose.   After her military service, she transitioned into a high-stakes healthcare environment supporting operations, strengthening her skills in organization, relationship-building, and communication under pressure.  Karla later discovered her passion for education, where she has dedicated more than 15 years to serving as a classroom teacher, instructional coordinator, and assistant principal.   She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on early childhood education from the University of Houston‑Victoria, a Master’s degree in Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Texas Tech University. Her dissertation, Unlocking Potential: Investigating Teacher Self-Efficacy and Its Impact on Culturally Responsive RLA Instruction for ELLs, reflects her passion for empowering educators and advancing meaningful learning experiences for multilingual students.   As a bilingual Latina and woman veteran, Dr. Guevara leads with authenticity, connection, and a deep belief in the potential within every person. She is now exploring opportunities to apply her expertise beyond the K–12 setting, including roles in EdTech, leadership development, and higher education, where she hopes to broaden her impact and continue to elevate diverse voices and learners.
