The Luddites: Raging Against the Machines 14 Nov 2023 --- The first Industrial Revolution, which occurred in Europe and America from roughly the mid-18th to the mid-19th centuries, was a period of rapid and sometimes dramatic change. It is sometimes defined as the period which saw the shift from a largely agrarian society, with manufactured goods produced by craftsmen, to an industrialized society. Machines took over roles previously filled by men and women, and in doing so eliminated long-standing occupations. As just one example, the spinning of yarn and thread, long the domain of the women of the household, became mechanized. Yarn and thread became less expensive and more readily available for consumers. At the same time, households in small towns and rural locales lost a long-held source of income. As the industrial revolution ran on, manufactories emerged, powered by wind, water, and eventually steam. For decades, water provided the most reliable power source, and it drove a continually expanding number of machines; gristmills, sawmills, looms, spinners, and other innovations of industry. Some were also powered by human feet operating pedals, and the treadmill led to the employment of children. Many labor-intensive jobs in the factories became the occupation of children, and child labor evolved into a social issue as well as an industrial one. Cities expanded as workers flocked to urban environments seeking employment for themselves and the other members of their households. Few cities were able to easily absorb the increases in population, and tenements and slums became a curse on many. Appalling living and working conditions were just part of the price of progress. Crime became a problem in crowded cities. Ethnic neighborhoods emerged, bringing with them the signs of intolerance and prejudice. While the owners of the factories grew fortunes from their profits, the workers found themselves largely unable to purchase the fruits of their labors. The result was resistance to progress, to innovation, and to change. Each new invention found those who opposed it. Each new system found those desiring to retain the old. The one certainty throughout the period was change, a certainty which some greatly feared. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week! https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1 Love content? Ronald Hunkeler: The Boy That Sparked The Exorcist

Ronald Hunkeler: The Boy Who Inspired The Exorcist. 25 May 2024 --- On May 10, 2020, a former NASA engineer named Ronald Hunkeler died from a stroke a month before his 86th birthday. After his passing, he was mainly remembered for his contributions to space explorations, including work on the Apollo space missions and even a patent on a technology that helped panels withstand extreme heat. Then, about a year later, a magazine exposé revealed the bizarre, sinister, and unique experience that Hunkeler endured when he was a boy, one which he kept private during his adult life. In his youth, Hunkeler was better known under the pseudonym Roland Doe, a 14-year-old boy who was believed to be possessed by the devil and underwent several exorcisms. His case, although it did not make any major national waves, still got mentioned in a few newspapers, including one small piece in the Washington Post which was seen by a student attending Georgetown University by the name of William Peter Blatty. For whatever reason, the story stuck with Blatty, and, two decades later, it inspired him to write a horror novel which then got turned into a movie that changed cinema forever - The Exorcist. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week! https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1 Love content? episode Annie Taylor: First Over Niagara Falls in a Barrel artwork

Annie Taylor: First Over Niagara Falls in a Barrel

When you say the word “daredevil,” what image springs to mind? After you picture the Marvel guy in the red suit, we mean. It’s probably a man, maybe in his 30s, dressed in a dazzling, sparkly leather outfit, wearing a crash test helmet on his head and flashing a pair of gleaming, crazy eyes, howling like a madman as he charges into a death-defying stunt at a hundred miles per hour. That’s a fair assessment, we would say. After all, a daredevil is a showman looking to garner as much attention as possible, because more eyeballs on his antics means more money and fame. But what if we told you that the daredevil we have in mind for today was none of those things? In fact, she was a quiet, matronly widow in her 60s named Annie Edson Taylor. She might not have looked the part, but make no mistake about it. Taylor’s daredevil credentials are as solid as it gets, and many others have risked (and sacrificed) life and limb in order to replicate her infamous feat - going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week! https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1 [https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1] Love content? Harold Shipman: The Killer Doctor

Harold Shipman: The Deadly Doctor 13 Aug 2024 --- Doctors are among the most trusted members of our society. There’s a good reason for this: we entrust them with our most valuable commodity, our health. People share things with their doctors that they keep secret from everyone else, even their closest loved ones. When we are sick or injured, we trust doctors to call upon their vast knowledge of the human body to make us feel better, and in many cases, to keep us alive. This, however, is a story of a doctor who did the exact opposite of what he was supposed to. Harold Shipman took advantage of the tremendous power he held over his patients in order to victimize them. He murdered hundreds of them in a grisly career that spanned over two decades, for no apparent reason other than because he could. For a long time, he was able to get away with it, using the exalted position his profession held in society to assure grieving relatives that their loved one had died a natural death in order to conceal his guilt. #truecrimestories #serialkillerdocumentary #haroldshipman What made Shipman so much more insidious than other serial killers was that he wasn’t killing strangers. He was beloved by his patients; his victims welcomed him into their homes and willingly rolled up their sleeves to receive the injection that would end their lives. He preyed on some of the most vulnerable members of society: elderly women who lived alone. Only after he was caught did people realize the enormity of what he had done: his body count marks him as the world’s most prolific serial murderer. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week! https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1 Love content?
