School Leadership Tip: Effective Hiring Practices

It's hiring season!  If you are a leader in education, are you sure your hiring practices align with your campuses' core values?  Have you taken the time to invest in the teachers you have now?  Are you showing teacher candidates the accurate depiction of your culture and allowing them to decide if they are aligned with your culture before sending them the "you are hired/offer" letter?  Avoid hiring mistakes, know what to ask, and know what to do when searching for the best talent.  You cannot afford "hiring mistakes" with such a teacher shortage.  Learn effective hiring practices that can save you from a waste of thousands of dollars in training new teachers, a headache, and an enormous amount of energy spent on the wrong people.  Show your high-quality teachers that you value them and learn how to keep them on your team so that they never leave.  If you are a new leader, a leader with high teacher/staff turnover, or a leader who was never coached on effective hiring practices, this is the episode for you. Domestic Terrorism: How White Supremacy and Racism Impacts Mass Shooting

Black Motherhood and Its Connection to Shaping Black Women Leaders

In honor of this past Mother's Day, Black Women In Ed Leadership Digital Content wanted to take the time out to celebrate Black motherhood and its roots connected to shaping Black women leaders. Black mothering differs from other racial groups because Black women have had to mother their children amongst the complex challenges presented by racism and many other oppressive systems. As a result, many Black mothers turned their oppressive tragedies into triumphs and have birthed children leading a nation and their communities, families, professions, and society. Our guest and my mom, Mauresia, share her experience as a mother, her lessons, and how she believes her mothering shaped her daughters' leadership. We need to hire a person of color! We need a woman quickly! Hurry, get me a Black man! Can we think of a Muslim we have around here that will make us appear as a diverse organization to the public? We have no BIPOC on the leadership team - we need to get one – hire a Black woman as that will serve as two demographics for the price of one! The Importance of School Board Elections

Local elections have historically been known to have low voter turnout!  We cannot afford to sit these elections out, especially with our school board meetings becoming hijacked by the manufactured "anger" around issues that have become politicized.  As a result, the cost of our student's education and becoming better citizens is becoming compromised.  Our school board is part of those local elections and tremendously impacts our students and communities. They decide the directions of our districts, our districts' culture, and what our districts prioritize for the benefit of ALL students.  Sitting out elections can involuntarily elect trustees who don't belong in these seats, ultimately negatively impacting our kids.  Tune in to this show's episode to learn why voting in these life-changing elections is essential.
