It Shall Not Return Empty. Today is the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost and the opening of Matthew 13 in Movement II of our summer through Matthew. Last Sunday was the gentle and lowly king’s invitation: come to me. This Sunday is the parable of how the Kingdom grows: a sower went out to sow. Isaiah 55:10–11 is the theological premise: as rain comes down from heaven and waters the earth, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty. The sower scatters seed on every kind of ground without pre-sorting because the word of God is not a scarce resource. The soils operate on two levels: as descriptions of different responses to the Gospel (from the closed heart to the fruitful believer), and as conditions any one of us may pass through at different times. The path (closed, hardened by traffic, the word never enters), rocky ground (shallow joy, no root, falls in trouble), thorny ground (the word germinates but the cares of the world and deceitfulness of riches choke it), good soil (hears and understands, the Greek syniemi (soon-EE-ay-mee), active comprehension; the hearing of a heart opened ultimately by the Spirit but attended to by the person; a yield of 30, 60, 100-fold, far beyond agricultural expectation). The tension between Isaiah 55 and the parable is resolved by noting that Isaiah’s promise is about God’s purpose being accomplished, not about every hearer bearing immediate fruit: the word is active even in the soils that don’t visibly produce, exposing and diagnosing what is there. Psalm 65 grounds the harvest in God’s gift: you visit the earth and water it; the valleys deck themselves with grain. The collect pairs perfectly: we ask God to open his ears to us while the parable asks us to open our ears to him, and the petition to be taught by the Spirit to ask only what is pleasing to God is a prayer to become good soil. “He who has ears, let him hear.” (Matthew 13:9, ESV)
