Reggatta de Blanc by The Police...Episode #25

In episode #25 of Classic Rock Album Olympics music historians Gary Wenstrup and Robert Rodriguez sail with Reggatta de Blanc by The Police and award their gold, silver and bronze medals for their favorite songs. Released October 1979, Reggatta de Blanc was the second album by The Police and the record that transformed the trio from promising new-wave outsiders into stars. Produced by Nigel Gray along with the band, the album expanded the reggae-rock and post-punk sound introduced on Outlandos d’Amour. The title – Reggatta de Blanc - loosely translates to “white reggae,” reflecting the group’s fusion of punk energy, reggae rhythms, jazz textures, and pop songwriting.   The album featured the classic Police lineup: Sting on bass and lead vocals, Andy Summers on guitar and Stewart Copeland on drums.  Together they created a sparse but highly rhythmic sound built around Summers’ atmospheric guitar work, Sting’s melodic bass lines, and Copeland’s inventive drumming.   Reggatta de Blanc became the band’s first UK No. 1 album. In the United States it reached No. 25 on the Billboard album chart, helping establish the band’s growing American audience. The singles “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon” both reached No. 1 in the UK.  The singles did not fare as well in the US. “Message” hit #74 and "Moon" did not chart.  The instrumental title track earned the band its first Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.   The album captured the restless energy of the late-1970s post-punk era while proving that reggae influences could coexist with mainstream rock radio. The Police stood apart from both traditional punk and arena rock by emphasizing space, rhythm, and sophistication over heavy guitar excess. Many critics and fans view Reggatta de Blanc as the album where the band honed its signature sound, paving the way for later classics like Zenyatta Mondatta and Synchronicity. Tapestry by Carole King...Episode #22

In this episode of Classic Rock Album Olympics music historians Gary Wenstrup and Robert Rodriguez discuss and award their gold, silver and bronze medals for Tapestry by Carole King. Tapestry released February 1971 is widely regarded as a landmark album of the singer/songwriter era, blending introspective lyrics with rich, melodic piano-driven pop and soft rock.  It spent 4 months (!) at #1 and stayed on the album charts for 6 ½ years. The album marked King’s breakthrough as a solo artist after years of writing hits for others, showcasing her distinctive voice and emotionally resonant songwriting. With understated production by Lou Adler, Tapestry featured Danny Kortchmar on guitar, Russ Kunkel and Joel O’Brien drums and Charlie Larkey on bass.  The band provided a warm, intimate foundation for King’s piano and vocals. “It’s Too Late” backed with “I Feel the Earth Move” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “So Far Away” reached #14.  The album included Carole’s versions of hits she wrote for others including Aretha’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” the Shirelles’ “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and James Taylor’s only #1 song “You’ve Got A Friend.” The album earned four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.  Tapestry’s combination of personal lyrics, melodic sophistication, and subtle production helped define early 1970s pop.  Importantly, it was a breakthrough for female singer/songwriters the world over. "God Only Knows" is now one of the most revered love songs in popular music history. The primary composer and producer behind Pet Sounds was Brian Wilson, who collaborated on lyrics with Tony Asher.  The album marked a shift from the group’s earlier car-and-surf themes to introspective explorations of vulnerability, doubt, romantic idealism, and emotional maturity. Songs like “You Still Believe in Me,” “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder),” and “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” revealed a fragile emotional honesty rarely heard in mid-1960s pop. Traditional rock instruments were blended with orchestral textures and unconventional sounds: harpsichord, tack piano, theremin, French horn, bass harmonica, sleigh bells, bicycle bells and empty bottles used as percussion.  The complex vocal harmonies—long a Beach Boys hallmark—were arranged with unprecedented sophistication. Historically, Pet Sounds is widely viewed as one of the first true “album statements” in rock, helping legitimize the LP as an artistic format rather than merely a collection of singles. The album’s emotional coherence and sonic experimentation directly influenced The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Though it was initially considered a commercial disappointment in the U.S., its reputation grew steadily, and it is now preserved in the National Recording Registry and consistently ranks at or near No. 1 on critics’ all-time album lists. Pet Sounds signaled the maturation of rock into art—intimate, orchestral, and psychologically complex.
