What does love look like when people are being harmed? In this deeply personal sermon, Teopixqui Dez wrestles with grief, anger, and the responsibility of a spiritual community in times of injustice. Drawing from the stories of Nehemiah and the Buddhist bodhisattva Shenrezig, he explores the difference between hatred and righteous fury—and why compassion sometimes requires courage, conviction, and action. In this sermon... As part of the Colorado Psychedelic Church's monthly series on finding wisdom across spiritual traditions, Teopixqui Dez turns to two ancient stories to examine what it means to protect the vulnerable. Beginning with recent events that left him grieving and angry, Dez reflects on the role of community during moments of national pain. Rather than avoiding difficult conversations, he argues that spirituality comes alive through action, reminding the congregation that faith is not something practiced in isolation but something expressed through how we care for one another. The first story comes from the Book of Nehemiah, where a sacred space intended to feed and serve the people is corrupted for political gain. Rather than accepting compromise, Nehemiah restores the temple, challenging listeners to consider what it means to defend spaces—and people—that deserve protection. The second story comes from Tibetan Buddhism and the legend of Shenrezig, the embodiment of infinite compassion. After witnessing endless suffering, Shenrezig's heart breaks under its weight, only to be rebuilt with many faces to see suffering everywhere, many arms to reach those in need, and fierce protectors whose purpose is not hatred but the defense of compassion itself. Together, these stories ask a difficult question: Can love have a backbone? Following the sermon, Bondsmith Rich shares a deeply personal reflection on immigrating to the United States from China, growing up without a defined religious tradition, and discovering a simple lesson about love from an unexpected Catholic priest. His story culminates with the congregation singing You Are My Sunshine, inviting everyone to reinterpret the familiar words as a reminder to protect the light within themselves. The sermon closes with a reminder that while anger can ignite action, love is what sustains community. Healing begins by standing together, welcoming new people into the circle, and refusing to let fear or hatred have the final word.
