Episode 14 - Douglas

On the Fourth of July, Thomas reaches Douglas, Michigan, hungry from the road and surrounded by flags before the fireworks have even begun. Every town says it supports the troops. Fewer rooms know what to do with the person waiting for a call, watching the news too closely, and reading each headline before the family line rings. Military wives and military spouses carry a service the country often sentimentalizes from a distance. Douglas asks whether support means more than discounts, slogans, and holiday applause. It asks what kind of freedom we are celebrating when the families who wait still have to measure their words in public. Episode 13 - Gary

Some cities are turned into warnings by people who never bothered to know them. Gary, Indiana has endured that treatment for a long time. Strangers say its name and think they have said enough. They have not. Gary is not a symbol. It is a city of brick, steel, lake wind, church calls, library rooms, old work, carried grief, and people who know the difference between being studied and being heard. In this episode, Thomas enters a public room where memory has to be protected before it can become part of the record. No one there needs him to save the city. No one asks him to explain what Gary means. The work in front of him is smaller, harder, and more honest than that. Listen for the air, the people who know before power admits it, and the quiet ways a community keeps testimony from disappearing. Episode 12 - DeKalb

Thomas reaches DeKalb, Illinois on June 20, 2026, tired from the road and carrying Wisconsin’s red stone close to his chest. He comes looking for coffee, shade, and a few quiet minutes. DeKalb gives him something stranger: a downtown Pride festival, a gifted paper crown, a table where people can sit down without performing, and a lesson he does not yet know how to receive. This is an episode about discomfort that does not become contempt, welcome that still needs boundaries, and sanctuary that has to be tended from inside the room. No one in DeKalb asks Thomas to understand everything. The day asks whether he can stay long enough to see one thing clearly. Episode 11 - Viroqua

Thomas enters the Driftless hills carrying Minnesota in his bones. Northfield has not released him. The road has softened into June, but not every wound follows the weather. In Viroqua, a market table gathers cans, diapers, flyers, names, good intentions, and the quiet pressure of a country under strain. The town knows how to help. That is part of the danger. This episode asks what happens when care must pass through paperwork, public proof, donor trust, small-town visibility, and fear. A table can feed a neighbor. It can also become a file. Thomas cannot fix hunger. He cannot fix the war, the economy, or the fear moving through ordinary families. He can carry a box, notice a line, protect a name, and learn whether mercy can travel without putting need on display.
