Conversations for our Daughters
Bran is joined by Laurie Anderson, a legendary avant-garde artist, musician, and filmmaker who has been a leading force in multimedia performance for over five decades. Originally trained in violin and sculpture, she became a fixture of the 1970s New York experimental scene before achieving unexpected global fame with her 1981 hit "O Superman," which reached number two on the UK charts. Throughout her career, Anderson has blurred the lines between high art and popular culture, casting herself as a storyteller who uses everything from electronics and visual imagery to poetry and photography to explore the human experience. As a pioneer of electronic music, Anderson is well-known for inventing her own instruments, such as the tape-bow violin and the talking stick, which she uses to manipulate sound and language in real-time. Her vast body of work includes ambitious stage productions like "United States I–IV", the acclaimed 1986 concert film "Home of the Brave", and the award-winning 2015 documentary "Heart of a Dog". From serving as NASA's first artist-in-residence to receiving a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2024, Anderson continues to push the boundaries of creative expression through technology, AI, and social commentary.
