Financial Capital Session 1 – Teaching

This week we began our semester long conversation around growing and maximizing our Financial Capital. Starting this journey from Matthew 6:19-34, we discovered from the Sermon on the Mount a little of Jesus’ view and understanding of money. The big thought from these verses was that “how we use our money gives us a peak into what we believe really matters in our lives”. Or to say it another way, “Our finances give us insight about our faith.” During this week’s teaching we learned that God really does care about our financial situation and that how we think through our relationship to money is incredibly important. While Financial Capital is the least of the Five Capitals in order of value, unfortunately an unhealthy attitude toward Financial Capital does lead to too many of our life problems. More friendships, partnerships and marriages end over financial issues than almost any other thing. Physical Capital Session 3 – Training

This week we completed our last training session on Physical Capital by talking about and demonstrating the benefits of Exercise. Mark and Mo (2 local personal trainers) both explained and demonstrated exercises that anyone could do anywhere at any time. As Dave interviewed Mark and Mo and we talked about creating a culture of health, we also remembered that Jesus was deeply invested in people’s health. Everywhere Jesus went health and healing followed him. This week we end our journey on Physical Capital by processing together some things that we have learned. Physical Capital Session 2 – Teaching

In this teaching we continued our conversation about how to increase our Physical Capital. We talked about the way joy and contentment are directly related to the increase of our time, energy and health. And we saw in Philippians 4:1-14, how Paul was able to live with joy and contentment in whatever situation or state that he found himself. By choosing to act differently, pray continuously and think positively Paul cultivated a life where he learned how not to become a slave to the relentless pursuit of more or a captive of his own outlandish expectations. This is a way of life that we could learn a lot from today. Too often our hunger and desire for more or our inability to acknowledge our own value or limitations robs us of God’s best for our lives and sends us on an endless goose chase that sabotages our time, energy and health. In the end we spend too much of our lives in a state of worry, anxiety, stress or fear. However, by learning the good news of moderation, limitation and valuation we can regain a proper view of life while maximizing our time, health and energy. In order to grab hold of this life we must confront the temptations of Appetite, Ambition and Approval. Thankfully, Jesus has led the way for us in this regard. And this week we saw just how the embrace of Moderation in regard to our struggle with Appetite, Limitation in regard to our struggle with Ambition and Valuation in our struggle with Approval set us free to gain the time, energy and health we so desperately need. Physical Capital Session 1 – Teaching

This past week we began our discussion on Physical Capital by talking about our need to define and strengthen our core. Whether we are talking about our physical bodies or our time and energy, it is by defining and strengthening our core that we increase our strength, stamina, flexibility and recovery rate. When our core is undefined or “out of shape” we often find ourselves incapable of living life to our maximum effectiveness. Jesus demonstrates for us what it looks like to live with a defined core. In Mark 12:28-34, Jesus is asked to define the greatest commandment. With incredible focus and definition, Jesus boils down all 613 commandments into 2 undeniable realities—Love God and Love People. From this core, all of Jesus’ ministry functioned with undeniable clarity, focus and strength. This week we followed Jesus’ example to discuss what living from a defined and strengthened core might look like and how it might enable us to maximize our Physical Capital.
