MONTCALM COMMUNITY COLLEGE – HISTORY OF HERITAGE VILLAGE Walk onto the campus of Montcalm Community College (MCC), look to the west, and you’ll find yourself stepping directly backward in time. Nestled right on the college grounds is the MCC Heritage Village—a pristine, living history collection that captures the architectural and cultural soul of late 19th-century Montcalm County. On this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed welcomes back prolific local author, educator, and historian Gary Hauck [https://www.garyhauck.com/]. Together, they explore the remarkable grassroots history of the village, an autonomous site that grew from a simple, temporary commemorative concept into an expanding landmark boasting over 25 historical structures. MCC HERITAGE VILLAGE: RESCUING ARCHITECTURE FROM “PROGRESS” The seeds of the village were planted in the mid-1970s and early 1980s when local historical structures faced destruction in the name of modernization. The college was initially offered the 1860 Shoen Log House from Crystal, followed closely by the late-1800s Gaffield Schoolhouse out of Amble. College administration initially questioned what an educational institution would do with a log home. However, a brilliant alignment of events occurred in 1986. MCC Trustee Bob Marston, who concurrently served on the Michigan Sesquicentennial Committee, proposed a visionary idea: What if the college accepted, moved, and preserved these buildings as its official contribution to the state’s 150th anniversary celebration in 1987? Dr. Don Burns, the college president at the time, enthusiastically agreed. The schoolhouse was transported on a massive flatbed truck, while the log cabin was painstakingly dismantled log-by-log and reassembled on campus. MCC HERITAGE VILLAGE THE BLUEPRINT FOR A LIVING HISTORY VILLAGE What was meant to be a standalone, single-year tribute quickly transformed into a long-term passion project. Four visionary local women—Hazel Smith, Rosemary Long, Maxine Harris, and Mildred Meijan—visited the White Pine Historical Village in Ludington and returned with an ambitious proposal for Dr. Burns: expand the site into a permanent, volunteer-led village celebrating historic architecture from all over Montcalm County. With the college’s blessing, an autonomous volunteer committee took the reins, establishing a comprehensive master plan. Over the following decades, the complex expanded structure by structure: * The General Store: Originally built downtown in Sidney by Lem Fish in the early 1900s, it was relocated to the campus in 1989. * The Sidney Town Hall: Funded entirely by the Sidney State Bank to ensure its preservation. * The Entrican School Foyers: Rescued and beautifully refurbished into a vintage barber shop and millinery hat shop. * The Doctor’s House: A stunning 1910 home originally located in Stanton, giving modern visitors a literal walkthrough of early 20th-century medical residential life. MCC HERITAGE VILLAGE TRAIN ROBBERIES AND STOLEN GRAVESTONES Beyond the beautifully restored wood and stone, the Heritage Village is home to some genuinely eccentric historical lore. Take the train depot, which honors the community of McBride (or McBrides, depending on which local generation you consult). Parked right outside is a majestic 1920 locomotive engine. Originally tracked down at the Coopersville depot, the community raised roughly $40,000 via bake sales and spaghetti dinners to move the non-operable engine via rail and truck. Years later, organizers discovered a thrilling secret: the engine had been directly involved in a historic, high-profile Canadian train robbery! Then there is the church courtyard cemetery. While it contains authentic, beautifully preserved 19th-century headstones, there are zero actual bodies buried on the property. One notable headstone belonging to a woman named Hannah Dickinson was found anonymously sitting on a resident’s back porch steps in Sheridan. Years later, a docent telling this story discovered that a visitor in the back row was Hannah’s direct great-grandson, solving a decades-old mystery of a headstone that had been stolen from a completely different local cemetery. MCC HERITAGE VILLAGE EXPERIENCING THE LEGACY Every August, the first weekend of the month marks the annual Heritage Village Festival. Docents don authentic period garb, campfires cook fresh bread, Civil War reenactors set up camp, and local children attend vintage class sessions completely free of modern digital distractions. For educators like Duane Weed, who routinely takes his digital media students from the Career Center to practice framing and camera work among the vintage structures, the village is an irreplaceable community treasure. It serves as a stark reminder of what can be accomplished when a community chooses preservation over demolition. To dive deeper into the individual stories behind all 25+ structures, you can find Gary Hawk’s commissioned book, The Story of Heritage Village, on Amazon. Army Sniper Bruce Harrington-Veteran Spotlight

BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD: ARMY SNIPER BRUCE HARRINGTON SHARES A STORY OF HUMOUR, HARDSHIP, AND HEALING Every community has its heroes, but we don’t always get the chance to sit down and truly understand the footprints they’ve left behind. On the latest episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast – Veteran Spotlight, host Duane Weed and co-host Kara Stevens opened up the studio for a deeply moving installment of our Veteran Spotlight series. Our special guest was Greenville native and U.S. Army Infantry Veteran Bruce Harrington. Joining him on the couch was Buck Rush, representing the Sheridan VFW Post 5065 [https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61574091747918] and the Honor Veteran Soldier Foundation. What followed was an unforgettable conversation that seamlessly balanced the raw, heavy realities of combat with the laugh-out-loud humor that keeps soldiers going in the darkest times. VETERAN SPOTLIGHT: FROM GREENVILLE TO THE SANDBOX Growing up right here in Greenville, Bruce always knew he wanted to serve his country, a dream kindled at a young age by standard civilian mainstays like GI Joe and military action movies. However, his path wasn’t a straight line. Entering the service a bit later at age 24, Bruce brought a sense of maturity with him into the infantry. Eventually stationed at Fort Hood, Bruce kept his head down, stayed out of trouble, and literally kept his nose in the Ranger Handbook. His discipline paid off when he earned a spot at Sniper School, eventually deploying to Iraq in December of 2005. While civilians often visualize snipers solely through the lens of Hollywood action sequences, Bruce explained that a massive part of their job is actually gathering battlefield intelligence—remaining entirely invisible to disrupt the enemy’s sense of security. YES, THERE IS A STOLEN DONKEY INVOLVED If you ask any combat veteran, they will tell you that humor is a survival mechanism. When Duane asked Bruce to share a lighthearted memory from his deployment, Bruce didn’t disappoint. > “I stole a donkey,” Bruce laughed. While on a grueling mission with a massive amount of heavy gear, Bruce’s unit crossed paths with a donkey. In a brilliant stroke of battlefield problem-solving, they drafted the animal into service. The donkey quickly became their official pack mule for the day, even behaving so well that the squad tried to load him directly into their Bradley Fighting Vehicle before leadership stepped in! It’s these human, hysterical moments that remind us of the resilience of our service members. VETERAN SPOTLIGHT: THE INVISIBLE BATTLES OF COMING HOME But the episode took a serious and vital turn as Bruce opened up about the profound difficulties of returning to civilian life. Bruce spoke candidly about taking two weeks of leave in the middle of his deployment—an experience he describes as an incredibly difficult mistake. “Young Bruce died over there, and someone else came back,” Bruce shared. The sudden shift from a high-stakes combat environment where you can’t switch your mind off, to a civilian world where people are trying to make everyday conversation, can leave a soldier feeling completely isolated. After returning home for good, the weight of losing close friends in his platoon took a massive emotional toll, causing him to temporarily pull away from his own family just to cope. IT TAKES A COMMUNITY: THE HONOR VETERAN SOLDIER FOUNDATION This is exactly why local support networks are vital, and it’s where the heart of Montcalm County truly shines. Buck Rush shared how he and Bruce originally crossed paths—not through military channels, but because the Honor Veteran Soldier Foundation [https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100095146666816] was looking for local military families to support for Christmas. When the foundation stepped in to surprise Bruce’s family with $500 for groceries and a specialized walker for his handicapped daughter, it broke down walls. It wasn’t just about the financial relief; it was the powerful realization that his community still had his back. Today, Bruce and Buck share a tight bond of friendship born out of that local outreach. VETERAN SPOTLIGHT: BRUCE’S ADVICE TO FELLOW VETERANS: DON’T GIVE UP Bruce closed the episode with an incredibly important message for any veteran currently struggling with the transition home or dealing with PTSD: Reach out, and do not give up on the VA. While the VA system has faced criticism in the past, Bruce emphasized that the care, efficiency, and mental health resources have vastly improved. “Be your own best advocate,” Bruce urged. If you don’t connect with your assigned doctor, ask for a new team. The resources are there, but you have to let people know what’s wrong. Duane also extended this plea to the community: If you are a spouse, a neighbor, or a friend of a veteran and you notice they are struggling, don’t wait for them to ask for help. Make the call, check in on them, and connect them with local resources like the Montcalm VA [https://www.facebook.com/MontcalmVets], Sheridan VFW 1-989-291-9680 [tel:1-989-291-9680] or the Honor Veteran Soldier Foundation please call (616) 788-4300 [tel:1-616-788-4300]. 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Michigan Crisis & Access Line [https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/keep-mi-healthy/mentalhealth/crisis-and-access-line] Call 988 [tel:988]   WATCH OR LISTEN TO THE FULL EPISODE We want to extend our deepest gratitude to Bruce Harrington for his service and for his incredible bravery in sharing his story with us. Clifford Lake Inn history ep 195

Quick answer: The Clifford Lake Inn, established in 1881, has a vibrant history, transitioning from a recreational resort to a Prohibition speakeasy. Rebuilt after a 1929 fire, it became a Michigan Historical Site in 1986. Many believe it’s haunted, with paranormal investigators reporting unexplainable phenomena and identifying entities, contributing to its enduring secrets and ghostly tales. KEY TAKEAWAYS * The Clifford Lake Inn was established in 1881 by Lewis Smith and James Richards. * During the 1920s Prohibition era, the inn secretly operated a speakeasy in its basement. * A catastrophic fire in 1929 destroyed approximately 85% of the structure. * The inn was officially designated a protected Michigan Historical Site in 1986. * Paranormal investigators have reported ghostly experiences, including recorded voices identifying entities named Ed and Megan. CLIFFORD LAKE INN: HISTORY, SECRETS, AND GHOSTLY TALES Clifford Lake Inn history: The Hidden Secrets and Ghostly Tales of the Clifford Lake Inn. Every local landmark has a story, but few possess a timeline as vibrant, dramatic, and potentially supernatural as the Clifford Lake Inn in **Stanton, Michigan**. Established back in 1881 by Lewis Smith and James Richards, this **historic Michigan landmark** has evolved through multiple eras—from a bustling recreational resort to a clandestine **Prohibition-era speakeasy**, surviving changing configurations, cultural shifts, and a massive fire. On the latest episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sits down with local author, historian, and world traveler Gary Hauck to discuss his collaborative book, The History of Clifford Lake Inn. On the latest episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sits down with local author, historian, and world traveler Gary Hauck [https://www.garyhauck.com/] to discuss his collaborative book, The History of Clifford Lake Inn. Alongside research from five dedicated Montcalm Community College students, Gary dug deep into the local archives to unearth the hidden narratives of this beloved eatery. CLIFFORD LAKE INN: RESORT TO PROHIBITION SPEAKEASY When it first opened its doors in the late 19th century, the Clifford Lake Inn was a full-service country resort. Historical photographs reveal an era of badminton rackets, fishing excursions, baseball leagues, and live music. By 1914, a massive circular dance hall was built directly around a giant tree on the property to host legendary big band concerts on Saturday nights. But when the 1920s arrived, so did Prohibition. According to local lore passed down through generations, the inn adapted by operating a secret speakeasy in the basement. To this day, a door remains in the basement featuring the classic eye-level viewing slit used to vet thirsty patrons looking for a illicit drink. CLIFFORD LAKE INN: TRAGEDY, REBIRTH, AND PARANORMAL ACTIVITY The inn faced its greatest hurdle in 1929 when a catastrophic fire destroyed roughly 85% of the structure under the ownership of Mac and Maude McConnonville. Though rebuilt and reconfigured multiple times over the subsequent decades—transitioning into a popular rock and roll venue in the ’50s and ’60s before falling into brief disrepair in the ’70s—it was officially designated a protected Michigan Historical Site in 1986. With such a fiery and lengthy past, many locals have long wondered: Is the Clifford Lake Inn haunted? According to paranormal investigators, the answer is a resounding yes. Previous owner Connie McQuery noted experiences of unexplainable cold air masses, footsteps, and turned-off lights mysteriously switching back on after closing up. More incredibly, paranormal teams utilizing advanced audio tracking equipment in the basement recorded a distinct, unearthly voice saying, “All clear,” as humans walked back upstairs. The entities even provided investigators with two distinct names: Ed and Megan—speculated to be souls who tragically perished in the historic 1929 fire. CLIFFORD LAKE INN HISTORY: PRESERVING MONTCALM COUNTY’S LEGACY Whether you go for the legendary sautéed mushrooms (a staple since the 1981 centennial menu), the phenomenal modern baked goods, or a peaceful summer dinner on the deck overlooking the lake, the Clifford Lake Inn remains an essential part of our community fabric. As Gary Hauck perfectly summarized at the close of the episode: > “Life is to be enjoyed… I don’t want to stop learning. I want to keep on learning all that I can, and enjoy life and those sweet people who are around me all the time.” To hear more incredible local stories—including the hilarious historical tale of an alcohol-drinking hotel parrot—listen to the full episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast today! The primary source of information for this article stems from an in-depth interview conducted on the Discover Montcalm Podcast with local author and historian Gary Hauck. Mr. Hauck’s extensive research for his collaborative book, “The History of Clifford Lake Inn,” involved dedicated efforts from five Montcalm Community College students and thorough exploration of local archives. Podcast Recording Tips EP 192

Quick answer: For beginners, achieving good podcast audio quality is crucial. Tips include encouraging guests to use external microphones, optimizing your recording space with simple solutions like blankets, ensuring proper microphone placement close to your mouth, and prioritizing local recording for cleaner interviews. DW Video & Multimedia, LLC in Howard City, Michigan, also offers podcast production assistance. KEY TAKEAWAYS * Audio quality is critical for podcasts, even with modern technology making creation easier. * For remote interviews, encourage guests to use external microphones and consider services like Auphonic or Descript for post-production. * Improve recording spaces by minimizing hard reflective surfaces with items like carpets, blankets, or acoustic panels. * Proper microphone placement, keeping it close to your mouth, creates a fuller sound and reduces room noise. * Local recording of interviews, capturing audio directly on each participant’s device, often results in higher quality than cloud recording. PODCAST RECORDING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS Podcast Recording Tips for Beginners Creating a podcast has never been easier. Modern technology allows nearly anyone with a smartphone or computer to start sharing their message with the world. But while the technical barriers have become lower, from choosing the right microphone types to mastering your recording software and setting audio levels, one thing remains critical: audio quality. In this edition of Tech Tuesday, Discover Montcalm Podcast host Duane Weed, DW Video continues his conversation with Mike Dell of Blubrry, exploring the recording side of podcasting and offering practical advice for beginners. Thank you for following the Discover Montcalm Podcast Podcast Recording Tips: Remote Interviews and Audio Quality Many podcasters want to interview guests from around In this edition of Tech Tuesday, Discover Montcalm Podcast host Duane Weed, DW Video [https://www.dwvideo.com]  continues his conversation with Mike Dell of Blubrry [https://blubrry.com/], exploring the recording side of podcasting and offering practical advice for beginners. Thank you for following the Discover Montcalm Podcast [https://discovermontcalmpodcast.com] ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR FIRST PODCAST RECORDING PODCAST RECORDING TIPS: REMOTE INTERVIEWS AND AUDIO QUALITY Many podcasters want to interview guests from around the country—or around the world. Tools like Zoom make that possible, but audio quality can vary greatly from guest to guest. Mike explains that poor audio often comes from guests relying on built-in laptop microphones or mobile devices. Encouraging guests to use an external microphone and position themselves correctly can dramatically improve sound quality. Services such as Auphonic, Descript, and Riverside can also help clean up and enhance recordings after they’re captured. PODCAST RECORDING TIPS: CREATING A BETTER RECORDING SPACE You don’t need an expensive recording studio to sound professional. Mike shares examples of podcasters successfully recording in closets, spare rooms, and other quiet spaces. Simple solutions like carpets, blankets, acoustic panels, and reducing hard reflective surfaces can significantly improve audio quality. The goal isn’t perfect silence—sometimes a little background ambience adds character—but minimizing distractions helps listeners stay focused on your content. PODCAST RECORDING TIPS: WHY MICROPHONE PLACEMENT MATTERS One of the easiest ways to improve your sound is proper microphone placement. Keeping the microphone close to your mouth creates a fuller, richer sound while reducing unwanted room noise. Whether you’re using a USB microphone or a more advanced setup, understanding microphone positioning can immediately improve your recordings. PODCAST RECORDING TIPS: LOCAL RECORDING VS. CLOUD RECORDING Mike also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of cloud-based recording services. While cloud recording offers convenience, internet issues can affect quality. Local recording solutions capture audio directly on each participant’s device before uploading it, resulting in cleaner, more professional-sounding interviews. KEEP LEARNING Podcasting continues to evolve, but the fundamentals remain the same: good content and good audio. By focusing on recording quality, room setup, and simple production techniques, creators can build podcasts that listeners enjoy. BEYOND THE MIC: ESSENTIAL TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR LAUNCHING YOUR PODCAST While recording is the foundation, a successful podcast journey involves more than just capturing sound. For beginners, understanding the right equipment and post-production workflow can make a huge difference. Consider exploring different microphone types, such as versatile USB condenser mics like the Blue Yeti or dynamic options like the Shure MV7, which are excellent for home studios. These choices offer distinct sound characteristics that can elevate your audio quality from the start. Once your audio is recorded, basic editing is key. Free and accessible Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Audacity or Apple’s GarageBand allow you to trim, cut, and arrange your episodes. Within these tools, you can also apply fundamental audio processing techniques such as compression to even out volume levels, equalization (EQ) to refine your sound, and noise reduction to clean up any unwanted background hum. Finally, to share your creation with the world, you’ll need a podcast hosting platform. Beyond Blubrry, services like Libsyn, Buzzsprout, or Spotify for Podcasters provide the necessary infrastructure to distribute your show to major directories like Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Don’t forget to craft compelling show notes and metadata; these are crucial for search engine optimization and helping new listeners discover your valuable content. HOWARD CITY CHAMBER BUILDS COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS WHAT DOES A CHAMBER DO? Howard City Chamber Builds Community Connections What does a chamber do? Howard City Chamber: When people hear the words “Chamber of Commerce,” many assume it is simply a marketing organization for local businesses. While promotion is certainly part of the mission, the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce serves a much broader purpose, driving vital economic development initiatives and robust business advocacy. In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, Bruce Williams, President of the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce, shares how the Chamber works behind the scenes to strengthen the community, support local businesses through enhanced networking opportunities, and serve as a bridge between organizations, residents, and visitors. In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, Bruce Williams, President of the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce, shares how the Chamber works behind the scenes to strengthen the community, support local businesses, and serve as a bridge between organizations, residents, and visitors. HOWARD CITY CHAMBER FOUNDED IN 2023 Founded in 2023, the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce has grown into an active community organization focused on connection, communication, and collaboration. Its mission is simple: “Where Community Connects.” One of the Chamber’s most valuable roles is serving as a community ambassador. Whether answering questions from potential residents, connecting visitors with local businesses, or promoting community events, the Chamber helps tell the story of Howard City and the surrounding area. HOWARD CITY CHAMBER – MISUNDERSTANDINGS OF A CHAMBER Bruce explains that many people misunderstand what a Chamber actually does. Unlike a marketing agency that promotes a single business, a Chamber promotes an entire community. It works to create awareness of local businesses, organizations, attractions, events, and opportunities that make the area unique. The Chamber also maintains representation on several local boards and committees, giving businesses a voice at the table and helping members stay informed about community developments, projects, and opportunities. HOWARD CITY CHAMBER BUSINESS EXPO One of the Chamber’s growing successes is the Howard City Business & Community Expo. What began as a local event has expanded to attract businesses and visitors from across West Michigan, demonstrating the growing interest in Howard City and its business community. Perhaps the greatest strength of the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce is its volunteers. Local business owners and community leaders donate their time and expertise to help create opportunities that benefit the entire area. As Howard City continues to grow, the Chamber remains focused on fostering relationships, supporting local businesses, and helping residents and visitors discover everything the community has to offer.
