Eyes on George Washington
EPISODE NOTES It is not widely known that George Washington was father to a stepson and stepdaughter. The latter, Martha Parke "Patsy" Custis, suffered throughout her life from epilepsy and died shortly before she turned 17 from a seizure. Washington strove earnestly to find a cure for Patsy and raise her in a manner appropriate for her social status and marital aspirations. Her early death saddened him greatly and prompted an outpouring of emotion in a letter reporting her end rarely seen in a man so often thought of as cold and distant. Seeing Washington's trials in his family circle and his determination to meet the challenges help explain the leadership characteristics that made him a successful general and beloved public figure. Sean Lyons, an undergraduate research assistant with The Washington Papers, wrote the script and serves as the narrator. He also performed the audio editing. William M. Ferraro, managing editor of The Washington Papers and faculty supervisor, voices George Washington's diaries and letters. Other undergraduate research assistants with The Washington Papers--Margot Ross, Estevis Velasquez-Flores, and Izabella Davidson--voice letters from other historical figures.
