Fighting Rape Culture
What happens when the people who are sent out to help others in foreign countries become the source of their nightmares? How can people who choose to do work to serve and protect people in precarious situations turn around and become the abusers? Why is this happening? And most importantly, how can organizations prevent this? This is what we will be discussing in today’s episode with Saúl Zavarce. Saúl (pronounced sah-ool) Zavarce (Zah-varr-seh) is a Venezuelan and Australian community organiser and masculinities specialist who works with humanitarian aid and development organisation in the preventing male violence from staff. He is a doctoral student at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid investigating how to prevent sexual exploitation and abuse by aid workers by intervening with men and expanding their understanding of patriarchy and ensuring accountability to feminism, women, girls and other gender and sexual minorities.
