One of the preeminent detectives of crime fiction's golden age, Dr Gideon Fell is stout, jovial and fond of beer and band music. However, he also possesses a razor-sharp mind and extraordinary powers of deduction, which are frequently put to the test as he is called upon to solve seemingly impossible crimes. Created by the master of the locked-room mystery, John Dickson Carr, Dr Fell appeared in 23 novels, several short stories and plays and numerous radio adaptations. These two dramas, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1997, see him embroiled in two inexplicable cases that have the police baffled. In The Hollow Man, two murders are committed by someone who appears to be both invisible and lighter than air while in The House in Gallows Lane, the peaceful English countryside of 1936 is disrupted by an alarming fortune-teller - and a mysterious death. These thrilling dramatisations star Donald Sinden as Gideon Fell with John Hartley as Hadley. Classic Radio Crime: presenting vintage detectives for your investigation! Members Reviews: Very enjoyable This is excellent entertainment. If you fancy something short that will keep you guessing and engage - these two episodes will be perfect for you. They invite to sitting at the fire with some knitting with their old English charm. The mysteries are not overly complex, but very pleasant listening. FANTASTIC DR GIDEON DOES IT AGAIN Good plain old fashioned English sleuthing at its best. Thoroughly enjoyed these two plays which had you guessing keeping you on your toes as each of the characters are put through their paces. I got both plots right in the end which is not a discredit to the writer nor the plot. I think Dickson Carr intentionally gives away certain little details as it his way of drawing in the listener and keeping the mind focused, involving the listener all the way through, which is fantastic little trick. Good old (Sir) Donald Sinden superb as always with his upper crust deep vocals and cheeky wit steels the whole show playing the part of the sleuth to aplomb. This is a splendid full cast production. Let us hope more will be found as these are how great sleuthing should be. Entertaining I found these to be very enjoyable indeed. Clever stories that were well performed by the actors.
