As a young woman, Daria, struggles to define herself against the grain of her family, she stumbles upon the complexities of her own identity. Nazemian's writing is funny and engaging, and I found myself racing through the book, thoroughly immersed in Daria's journey. And being of Middle Eastern heritage myself, I loved how Nazemian expertly pulled back the curtain to share a specific yet relatable cultural world with the reader. The Authentics is a fantastic read -- I highly recommend it! Timely, fun, and funny "YA" novel that old(er) and young alike will love. I mean... I'm kicking myself that I couldn't write this review earlier to encourage this as a holiday gift for the "young adult" in your life but I just read it on my flight out of town for vacation. And it's a hit. Novels that are well written in the 1st person are special for me. They do something movies and television simply don't. And that's what we have here: wonderful 1st person story that is part coming-of-age, part mystery, part comedy. The story is focused on Persian-Americans in LA, and happily so. They're a fascinating lot in Nazemian's depiction. But the book additionally has a universe of characters from almost all backgrounds and lifestyles. In these tense and rancorous days, this deft integration is welcome! And fun! And funny! I guess the powers that be deemed it a "YA" novel... or perhaps the author wrote it with that intent. But I just experienced a novel... one that was pleasantly intent on portraying the inner world and outer journey of its young female protagonist. In doing so, I felt young again myself. And for that I'm appreciative. Recommended without reservation. wonderful characters, engaging story I finished the Authentics within hours of receiving it from Amazon and was nothing short of blown away.

Sarah Carrollâs The Girl In Between depicts life on the street and on the move for a young girl and her mother from the eyes of the young girl. Within the walls of her Castle, a young girl can dream of the fairy tale life she wants instead of the harsh reality of homelessness she faces every day. While she has free reign over the Castle, she must be vigilant to remain invisible from the outside world or risk being taken away from her mother by the Authorities. With Authority representatives in yellow vests coming around her Castle to evaluate it, the girl fears that her home may be taken away from her or she from it, which would greatly change her life. In learning about the Castleâs history as a mill from a fellow squatter, called the Caretaker, who is struggling against his past and grief to leave the mill after forty-seven years, the girl realizes that her mother also needs to face whatâs haunting her in order to keep moving forward. A quick read that presents the realities of the world through the lens of a young girl offering a new perspective from which to consider the unfortunate issue of homelessness that plagues society. While the perspective of and experience with homelessness from the vantage point of young girl was quite intriguing and interesting as it was written in a manner that was captivating and using language that befits the narrator, the narrative was ultimately rather confusing, perhaps because it lacked an appreciable plot.
