You won't know quite whether to laugh, cry, or thank Dr. Wakely for his almost criminally Victorian little 1846 book whose original, full title is: "Woman and Her Secret Passions Containing an Exact Description of the Female Organs of Generation, Their Uses and Abuses, Together with a Detailed Account of the Causes and the Cure of the Solitary Vice". If that doesn't have you panting breathlessly, some of the good doctor's rather indiscreet patient stories will. Masturbation is the evil he seeks to cure, and based on the original cover, you'd be forgiven for assuming it was a best seller. We don't know. Despite stating that it was "for sale by all booksellers", one wonders who would have the nerve to make such a purchase in 1846. Men could have purchased it for the racy stories, and when you first dive in, you might think it was written for precisely that purpose. But Doc Wakely should be given at least the credit for recognizing that the clitoris exists, that it was the "seat of female pleasure" (if parenthetically he felt it was only that when coupled in blissful matrimony), and that he does not condemn female pleasure outright. He does give a fairly good account of the uses of the "female organs of generation", but the abuses he blames for all manner of physical, emotional, and psychological ills. In men, he is certain beyond doubt that masturbation leads to IMPOTENCE (his capitalization). He tells young women not to lie in bed until late morning "...because of the fatal habits to which it sometimes gives rise, and which it fosters to a most alarming degree." Of a pair of fun-loving newlyweds, he remarks upon their reaching a point of asexual relations: "For a few days they enjoyed great pleasure, but as they continued this course week after week, they exhausted the flame of pleasure. To speak plain English, they wasted their seminal fluid too lavishly - they drained their bodies of that precious liquid, which is the cause of beauty, youth, and love." Of another patient whom he examines, he states, "I also discovered that she was finely formed for giving the highest pleasure to a companion equally amorous with herself." Oh doctor!

A Defense of Calvinism (Kindle Locations 182-183). . Kindle Edition. A real modern classic! Fast reading but full of ... A real modern classic! Fast reading but full of TRUTH. He validates his position well and is convincing in what he sees as Biblical truth and heresy. It is a helpful tool for pastors to use as quick sermon reference or illustration for what the Gospel really says and means. His one liners are powerful to quote in any bible study, classroom or sermon to be preached. The truth is in it all over the place with lots of references to dig deeper in your studies. Passionate, appealing Spurgeon's defense is a passionate appeal to emotion for the correctness of the doctrine of election. It's weak if one is looking for iron clad scriptural support however. In fairness we need to remember that this was the style of the day, and I suspect it was much better received in its day than it appears in today's very clinical settings. The modern reader - like me - might find it a bit thin based on scriptural or logical evaluation. Over all, however, it is a pleasant read. Even if it is unlikely to convince a dedicated Arminian. Calvinism defended Spurgeon is very clear in his delineation of the reasons as why he believes in the doctrines of Grace. A good read for those who are caught in the middle of the Calvinism/Arminian debate and need someone to clearly state the Reformed view. Spurgeon is quite the apologist in this brief writing. Solid Convincing Defense of Calvinism A strong, concise defense of the Biblical doctrine of election through a conversational treatise of biblical and philosophical considerations. Definitely, a worthwhile read.

In order to avoid forcing the listener to listen to long recitations of numeric tables, there are small abridgements at a few points in the book. However, no substantial text has been removed and Keynes' arguments and methods of analysis remain intact. This is economics; there are some places where the numerical facts get a little dense, but Keynes succeeds in keeping his argument clear even when the going gets heavy. Enjoy! Members Reviews: Essential Readings for the 20th Century There are a number of surprises throughout this extended essay making it worth your attention. Keynes, still in his thirties, deconstructs the allied treaty at Versailles following the victory over Germany in World War I. His primary criticisms are that the Treaty is vengeful, unfair, and pays little attention to the economic consequences of its terms. At times Keynes is poetic: he is writing in the "dead season of our fortunes" [1919]. His words are urgent, because this Treaty has "destructive significance". It is morbidly prophetic: "If we aim deliberately at this impoverishment of Central Europe, vengeance...will not limp." Keynes' Dickensian sketches of the key Allied players, the UK's Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, France's Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau and the U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson are vivid and devastating. Keynes' "Economic Consequences" is worth reading for these alone. How different a picture of President Wilson we get from Keynes versus what we read in middle school history.

This is a most interesting first-person account of how intelligent people can talk themselves into acceptance of undemocratic political systems, written by a Nobel laureate who lived through WWII and the early years of Soviet domination in Poland. The Primodial Soup of the Current Russian Evolution I wish I could put this in the hands of every American and Russian. Milosz wrote this during the end of the World War as the Soviet Union spread it's authoritarian version of communism to the Eastern Europe. This book is scathing and humorous in it's treatment of that failed regime. He describes through personal experience, not only how liberals and progressives avoided the cultural police and gulags, but perhaps even more valuable, how his "comrades" changed to become part of this authoritarianism. I cannot recommend this book high enough for anyone who has read Godfather of the Kremlin, or Putin's Kleptocracy. This book covers the very beginning of the sort of regime Putin would seem to resurrect in the name of Empire and God. Milosz saw the worst and lived to tell the story. Czeslaw Milosz lived through "interesting times". Educated in the 1920s in Lithuania, he lived in Poland at the time of the invasion of the Nazi armies in 1939.
