Early Extension is one of the most common swing faults in golf. Many golfers are told to "stay down" or "keep their posture," but modern biomechanics shows that Early Extension is usually a compensation for limited mobility, poor stability, or neurological restrictions—not a simple technical mistake. Early Extension occurs when the pelvis moves toward the golf ball during the downswing, forcing the body to stand up and reducing space for the arms and club. The result is blocked shots, hooks, inconsistent contact, loss of power, and increased stress on the lower back. Research from TPI, GOLFTEC Optimotion, and the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) shows that the root causes often include restricted hip internal rotation, poor ankle mobility, weak glute and core stability, limited pelvis-to-torso separation, and the Left AIC pattern. When the nervous system detects instability, it limits hip rotation, causing the body to compensate by thrusting the pelvis forward. Elite golfers generate speed differently. They use Ground Reaction Forces, maintain trail hip flexion, and sequence movement from the ground up. During transition, the hips lower slightly before pushing vertically, creating elastic energy, improved sequencing, greater clubhead speed, and efficient rotation. Correcting Early Extension requires improving mobility, restoring pelvic position, strengthening stabilization, and training the body's movement sequence rather than manipulating swing positions.
