Career Spotlight: Professor

In this episode, Jacob talks with Dr. Wendy Bolyard, a professor at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver. You will learn about the realities of working in academia, the daily life of a professor, the type of people that enjoy this work, and reasons to consider getting a PhD. Working in academia is so much more than just teaching students and grading assignments! Wendy describes the research and public service side of her job, the future outlook for professors, and why you should think about a career in academia. Wendy is a champion for any and all undergraduate students and is a great person to talk to about graduate school and public sector career advice. Advocacy

Today’s episode is all about Advocacy. I interview a lifetime advocate and Greenhouse Scholars professional networking contact, Bryan Bird. Besides being an all around awesome guy to talk to, Bryan brings 25 years of professional advocacy experience to our conversation. What you will learn from this conversation is that no matter what career field you're in at some point you are going to have to advocate for yourself, for your ideas, or for others. Being an effective advocate means that you can motivate people around you about something; it means that you are persuasive and have the ability to understand other people’s perspectives. In addition to these skills being key skills of an advocate, they are all leadership skills! Listen to this one and learn how to better advocate for what you believe in.
