Recorded at the school during the 1960s and digitally extracted from the original 7" vinyl, this recording was kindly made available to us after the vinyl was sent to us in June 2026 by a record dealer in Kent after he came across it. Together with the school song Χαίρετε, it provides a rare and evocative glimpse into the musical and ceremonial life of the school more than half a century ago. For generations of pupils, Prize Day was one of the most important events in the school calendar, bringing together students, staff, parents and distinguished guests. This hymn formed part of that tradition, its words and melody helping to mark an occasion of celebration, reflection and achievement. Today, the recording offers more than just a performance; it is a piece of living history, preserving the voices and spirit of a bygone era. This historic audio has been digitally extracted and carefully restored from a 7" vinyl record, kindly sent to us in June 2026 by a record dealer in Kent after he came across it. Preserved for decades on vinyl, the recording captures a unique piece of the school's musical heritage and brings it back to life for a new generation of listeners. One particularly fascinating detail is the pronunciation of the title itself. On this recording, the pupils sing Χαίρετε as “Xai-ra-tee”, reflecting the way it was commonly pronounced at the school during that period. Today, the song is generally sung as “Xai-ra-tay”, making this recording a valuable snapshot of how traditions and pronunciations have evolved over time. Whether you remember singing it yourself or are hearing it for the very first time, this is an opportunity to experience the school song as it sounded more than half a century ago. James reflects on arriving at The Grove in Year 9, stepping beyond his comfort zone and gradually discovering a deep sense of belonging that would go on to shape his character and forge lifelong friendships. He speaks warmly about the inspirational leadership and dedicated staff who encouraged him to embrace opportunity, grow in confidence and make the most of every aspect of school life. This episode traces his path into teaching and ultimately back to The Grove as Headmaster in 2016.
