Ep #119 The High Cost of Unbelief

Jim returns as we continue our Walk with Jesus series. Today we enter Mark 11:11–21, where we encounter one of the most well known moments in Jesus' ministry: His cleansing of the temple. There, He confronts those who had turned a place of worship into a place of exploitation, taking advantage of those who had come to seek God. Yet surrounding this dramatic event is another account that has puzzled readers for centuries: Jesus' encounter with a fig tree. At first glance, His response seems surprising, even confusing, leaving many to wonder why this story is included in Scripture at all. As we look more closely, however, we discover that the fig tree is not an isolated event, but a powerful lesson that frames everything happening in the temple. Together, these passages reveal a sobering warning about outward religion without genuine faith, while also pointing us to the incredible grace of God. We all have those moments when God throws us a curveball. We expect life to go one way, only to find ourselves facing something completely different. In those moments, we are often left scratching our heads and asking, "Lord, what are You doing?" That is exactly where we find ourselves today in 2 Kings 5. Here we meet Naaman, the mighty commander of the Syrian army. Though feared by his enemies and respected by his king, Naaman has a problem that no amount of power, wealth, or military success can solve: he has leprosy. When he hears of a prophet in Israel who can heal him, he sets out with certain expectations about how things should unfold. But when God's answer comes, it is nothing like what Naaman had imagined.
