Pumped hydro power storage (PHPS) has evolved significantly since its inception in the late 19th century, marking a crucial advancement in energy storage technology. The first applications emerged in Italy and Switzerland during the 1890s, with the first facility, Engeweiher, constructed in 1907. The technology reached the United States in 1930, with a system implemented by the Connecticut Electric and Power Company.Technological advancements, particularly the introduction of reversible hydroelectric turbines in the 1930s, greatly enhanced PHPS efficiency. The construction of pumped storage plants surged between 1960 and 1990, driven by the oil crises of the 1970s that underscored the need for alternative energy solutions. Today, China leads globally with over 50.9 GW of capacity, followed by Japan and the United States. PHPS systems require specific geographical features, such as significant elevation differences and water access, making them most viable in mountainous regions. Despite these constraints, PHPS remains the predominant form of utility-scale energy storage, accounting for 96% of such capacity in the U.S.Looking forward, many countries are expanding their pumped storage capabilities to support renewable energy integration and grid stability, solidifying PHPS's role as a vital component in modern energy systems.

Initially used for lighting, oil's potential expanded with the internal combustion engine, revolutionizing transportation and increasing automobile ownership. Its superior energy density (approximately 44 MJ/kg) compared to coal made it more efficient to transport and store. Oil's cleaner handling further facilitated its adoption in industrial and agricultural applications.
