In this episode, David Cohen interviews Sarah Matheson. For over 25 years Sarah was a lawyer at Allens, a leading firm in Australia specializing in IP protection, commercialization and litigation in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, engineering, mining and telecom. Sarah led the Allens IP Group’s Healthcare Sector team and the Innovation Action Group, among other roles. She always was very involved in Pro Bono work including a large number of worthy clients and efforts. Sarah was a member of a number of Academic Advisory Boards in Australian law schools, and (among other roles there) Report General of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, A/K/A "AIPPI." On the nonlegal side, Sarah is the Chairman of the Board of the Australian Ballet School and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation. In all of these positions Sarah has earned numerous awards and accolades including being named “Global Elite Thought Leader for Patents”, “Lawyer of the Year for Life Sciences”, and featured in the Global Top 250 women in IP. Our discussion focused on the arc of her career and insights on various trends in IP law in Australia and how they relate to various global trends.
