Hello, I'm in my late 40's and perimenopause. I started HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) today June 15, 2026 and I’m sharing my journey each step of the way. My background: I was on birth control for over 20 years and decided to stop taking it in my mid 30's because I didn't want to keep putting hormones into my body, I wanted to be drug-free. Shortly after, I got my tubes tied. In 2023 I visited my gyn for heavy periods. An ultrasound confirmed it was fibroids, which is what I suspected. She suggested endometrial ablation as well as HRT, like a low dose birth control pill or a Mirena IUD. NONE of that appealed to me. I was EXTREMELY against HRT because I was anti medication and anti procedure. So instead, I decided to continue taking Lysteda (tranexamic acid) for my heavy period days. About a year after that appt I got on the GLP-1 Tirzepatide (compounded Zepbound) and lost over 45 pounds. My heavy period days still happened, but usually just one day per cycle as opposed to two days. However, recently I started experiencing very irregular periods. Sometimes late but more often it was frequent occurrences with lots of spotting in between. Super disruptive!! Other symptoms have been intense nights sweats, more hot flashes (vasomotor stuff like red flushed face and neck), anxiety spikes and brain fog. Other less frequent symptoms have been tingly fingertips, heart flutters, and electric shocks. Sooo I went down the rabbit hole of researching perimenopause and HRT. And I found recent studies that debunked the old studies that used to demonized HRT. The newer studies show the benefits far outweigh the risks. Based on that, I decided to pull the trigger and pursue HRT for my perimenopause symptoms. I have been VERY nervous about it BUT I’m pushing through my fears to see if it alleviate my symptoms, plus reap the potential health benefits like preventing osteoporosis, cognitive decline, and cardiovascular disease. Here I talk about my personal experience with HRT.
