Main Street Chatter
Disneyland opened July 17, 1955 to those lucky enough to make it for the much anticipated new theme park. Media marked the event as Black Sunday due to infrastructure issues and chaotic highway backups for up to 10 miles long all while being broadcast live on multiple networks. Disneyland had invitation only tickets and expected around 30,000 people and was flooded with nearly 55,000 people due to counterfeit tickets and people hopping the fences to get in. The temperature was 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the asphalt was literally melting, infamously claiming one woman's high heel shoe who obviously wasn't expecting to get 20,000 steps in that day. The initial reports were dismal and rumors were that it was going to be a catastrophic mistake, but Walt had a vision and a dream, and he knew that he had to keep opening new doors.
