The land where Basra would one day rise was unlike any other, a involved chassis of aqueducts and morasses, where the Tigris and Euphrates, flowing from the distant mountains, met in an intricate cotillion before surrendering their waters to the Gulf. The early settlers knew the morasses as both a bounty and a challenge rich soil for crops, doormats for structure, fish for food, but also shifting channels that could swallow a home in a season if neglected.
