Midlife A La Bahareh
Episode 22 — Successful people do not usually struggle because they have no standards. They often struggle because the standards that helped them build a capable, respected, high-functioning life can start turning against them. In this episode, I explore what happens when discipline, responsibility, and excellence stop serving your life and start quietly tightening around it. We look at how high achievers can mistake harshness for integrity, endurance for strength, and constant self-correction for growth. We explore the difference between standards that protect your self-respect and standards that quietly punish you, why “I should be able to handle this” can become an inner trap, and how miscalibrated standards can create depletion even when everything still looks successful on the outside. I also share reflection questions and a practical exercise to help you notice where your standards may be driven by fear, pressure, or old identity rather than truth, identify which expectations no longer fit the life you want to inhabit now, and begin recalibrating your standards without lowering your self-respect.
