Originally designed as a low-cost export fighter to counter the spread of Soviet MiGs, the F-5 proved itself far more capable than many expected — serving in Vietnam, dominating as an aggressor aircraft in US training programs, and later evolving into the formidable F-5E Tiger II. In this video, we explore the aircraft's origins, combat performance, Soviet evaluation tests against the MiG-21 and MiG-23, and the remarkable design philosophy that ultimately influenced the development of fourth-generation fighters like the F-16 and F/A-18. Small, simple, and deadly, the F-5 earned a reputation as one of the finest dogfighters of its era.

Why was the A-5 Vigilante forgotten?

See the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDdlkD7QfM8 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDdlkD7QfM8] Made possible by our members—this is what keeps the channel independent and ongoing ✔ Merch & Members ► https://peacemaker.net.au [https://peacemaker.net.au] Was the A-5 Vigilante one of the most advanced, and most overlooked, aircraft ever to serve with the US Navy? Introduced in the early 1960s as a Mach 2 carrier-based nuclear bomber, the Vigilante pushed the limits of aviation technology. With cutting-edge systems like one of the first onboard digital computers, early fly-by-wire elements, and advanced navigation and bombing automation, it represented a leap forward in strike aircraft design. Yet despite its performance and sophistication, the Vigilante's original mission was short-lived. As nuclear strategy shifted toward missile-based deterrence, the aircraft was rapidly reassigned — ultimately finding its true role as the RA-5C reconnaissance platform during the Vietnam War. Flying high-speed intelligence missions over heavily defended territory, the Vigilante became one of the most capable, and most vulnerable, aircraft in the conflict, recording the highest loss rate of any US Navy aircraft type in Vietnam. So why is it barely remembered today? We explore the full story, from Cold War origins to eventual retirement. A remarkable aircraft that helped shape the future of naval aviation.

AIM-7 Sparrow

See the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eMl93Oo65c From its rather unreliable debut in Vietnam to a much more reliable missile in Desert Storm, the AIM-7 Sparrow has been critical in the evolution of radar-guided air-to-air combat. Out of U.S. Navy experiments in the late 1940s, the Sparrow became an important weapon in beyond-visual-range warfare for decades, arming Phantoms, Tomcats, and Eagles across the Cold War. Though plagued by malfunctions early on—with a kill probability of less than 10%—successive redesigns transformed the missile into a reliable weapon, achieving over 50% effectiveness by the Gulf War. Today, its naval cousin, the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow, remains active around the world, and in Ukraine, adapted Sparrows are once again seeing combat. We explore the Sparrow's long and controversial service history—its technological breakthroughs, battlefield failures, and ultimate legacy as the bridge between gun-armed jet fighters and the missile-centric air forces of today.
