Connect with Cam: All 50 States

Transitioning in any field can be challenging, but for those in college athletics, navigating identity can feel particularly isolating. This episode dives into the heartfelt journey of Cameron Wine, a trans man and professor of sport management, who shares his experience transitioning while working in the athletic administration. Cameron’s journey started when he was transitioning, yet found himself searching for others like him in college athletics. He recalls, "When I was transitioning, I remember going on Google and trying to find trans athletic administrators, or trans people working in college athletics. The results were zero." Cameron’s quest for support led him to a local support group, where he initially felt out of place. However, his therapist encouraged him to continue attending, suggesting he might find someone who shared similar experiences. This advice proved valuable when he met someone affiliated with an athletic department, which provided him with a sense of connection and comfort. He reflects, "Knowing that there was somebody 30 minutes down the road made it a little bit easier for me." By sharing his own story, Cameron hopes to dismantle these misunderstandings and advocate for a more informed and compassionate approach to the trans community. Cameron details his personal struggles with identity, beginning from a young age. "I grew up a tomboy," he explains, noting that societal expectations around gender roles limited his ability to fully engage in sports he loved as puberty set in. His first encounter with a trans person in college stirred something within him, prompting deep reflection about his identity. "I didn’t have the language then to describe how I felt," Cameron shares. It wasn't until he was married that he began to understand his gender identity more clearly, allowing him to embrace who he truly is. Cameron's journey toward authenticity had it's own set of challenges. He recalls a pivotal moment in 2023, where he recognized that his mental health was suffering due to his work-life balance. "I realized I was running from my truth," he admits. This realization prompted him to seek therapy once again, where he encountered a supportive therapist who encouraged him to embrace his identity rather than hide from it. In a breakthrough moment, Cameron realized he didn’t have to leave college athletics to be himself. His therapist’s words resonated deeply: "You can’t control how other people are going to react to your existence." This moment marked a significant turning point in Cameron's journey, allowing him to reclaim his place in the field he loves. His story is a testament to the importance of understanding, support, and representation in the trans community, particularly in fields where visibility is limited. Cameron’s journey illustrates the power of sharing stories to foster understanding and community. His commitment to documenting trans voices through the 50 States of Trans Voices project not only aims to humanize the experience but also provides a platform for others to be seen and heard. As Cameron continues his journey, he encourages those in similar situations to embrace their truth and seek community support. The visibility of trans individuals in all fields, including athletics, is crucial for dismantling stigma and creating an inclusive environment for all. What is the 50 States of Trans Voices project? The project aims to connect with trans individuals across the country to share their stories and humanize the trans experience in various fields, including athletics. How can I support trans individuals in athletics? Listening to their stories, advocating for inclusive policies, and fostering understanding in your community are vital ways to support trans individuals in athletics.
