Barreiro Highway to Hell

The Barreiro fanfare band is shredding it with their own rendition of Highway to Hell. I really like the opposition between the piece played and the tidy and proper look of the musicians. The Great Swamp of Lunis

The great swamp of Lunis encircles the planet like a collar, forming a wide band that divides the grasslands and mountains of the North from the vast central desert. When the enormous red sun finally sinks below the horizon, the bright crescent of the first moon is already up, swiftly followed by two more, scratching the sky’s surface like the claw marks of some terrible three-toed beast. Under the purple light of the moons, plants and insects fluoresce, their light refracting through the wet air in an eerie glow. The forest sings, sweet and poisonous. There are beetles the size of a dog, their carapaces shiny as wet vinyl, and harder than an armoured tank. There are birds the size of humans, with beaks long and twisting like drill bits, or curved into cruel scythes. Their plumage is black and gleams with oily reflections like petrol spilled on water. In the hot, dark dampness below the canopy, amongst vast lakes of viscous black liquid, wet things hiss and slither. We know so little about the Great Swamp of Lunis. Insulation

While insulating my mum’s aircon for the winter, I had to tear open polystyrene pipes. The crunchy sound is filtered by the length of the pipe remaining to open. In the background, you can faintly hear the swimming pool pump. The birds were surprisingly quiet this morning. This is a public episode. Overhead flight

Improvisation with my ever evolving Chaos Conductor MAX/MSP patch using various field recordings. In this session: - A creaking door (pitched up) - A sample from Wham! (very much pitched down and reversed) - Birds in Portaferry, Ireland - A train compressor - A drop falling in a fountain in the palace of Queluz near Lisbon, Portugal - Claps reverberating in narrow stairs near the Pont du Gard in France The performance is an impromptu improvisation while designing the new version of the patch. The bassy sound from the beginning of the recording was so cool I had to record. Skip to the second half for more variety, I just couldn’t cut out the digital rumbles and glitches.
