Why I'm Buying Music Again in 2026

I bought an MP3 player for my daughter. That sent me down a rabbit hole of downloading old purchases, ripping CDs, and realizing I don’t actually own most of the music I’ve paid for. It started with trying to avoid smartphones and finding a simple device — the Innioasis Y1 — that just plays music. But once I had it, I had to answer an important question: Where is my music? Between Apple Music, Amazon Music, Bandcamp, and old CDs, I’d built up a decent collection over the years — and then handed control of it to streaming platforms without really thinking about it. So I started pulling it all back. Stop telling yourself you can't be without your phone.

Someone recently told me that they can’t leave the house without their phone. I call Bull. We’ve been reprogrammed to thing we need it at all times. Even my parents, who spent almost as much of their lives without cell phones as with them, think they are a necessity. Here’s my case against that idea. What I Learned from the Book From Silk to Silicon

I finished reading FROM SILK TO SILICON: The Story of Globalization Through Ten Extraordinary Lives [https://amzn.to/3LnFPgc] by Jeffrey E. Garten and enjoyed it. He tells (as you might surmise) the story of how we became a globalized society through the lives and accomplishments of ten people throughout history (up until the year 2000). The book was written in 2016, with a new preface added in 2017. He starts with Genghis Khan and goes up to Deng Xiaoping (the Chinese dictator who opened up China for world trade), with lots of interesting people in between. Here are my biggest takeaways. It’s likely a coincidence that the best quarter in my business was also the quarter where I left nearly all social media behind. The truth is that it’s been a gradual process that started when I left Twitter in December 2024 [https://casabona.org/2024/12/twitter-lock-out/]. I was tired of reading garbage, and engaging in garbage, and the benefit I was getting from being on the platform was basically non-existent. Since then, I realized most social media apps are like that. I got rid of Threads (apparently right before they changed it to be less like garbage), then TikTok. Those were easy because I barely used them anyway.
