Pearls of Wisdom with Ebony Sade
One person is scrolling. Someone else is watching a video. The television is playing in the background. Notifications keep interrupting the conversation. Everyone is physically present…but mentally somewhere else. We often think reconnecting requires another vacation, a special outing, or a perfectly planned family activity. But sometimes what our families need most is much simpler. They need our attention. Pearl of Wisdom Attention is one of your family’s greatest resources. We usually think about stewardship in terms of money. But God has also entrusted us with time, focus, relationships, and opportunities to be present. Where our attention goes, our relationships follow. When our devices constantly receive our best focus, our families may begin receiving what remains. That does not mean technology is bad. It means we have to decide what deserves priority. Distraction Quietly Steals Connection Most families do not become disconnected during one dramatic moment. It happens gradually. One notification. One quick message. One more video. One more email. Over time, we can become physically close but emotionally distant. Relationships are a lot like muscles. They grow stronger through consistent use. Conversation, laughter, listening, shared meals, and ordinary moments help build trust. When those moments disappear, the connection begins weakening too. Presence Communicates Love Children may not remember every gift we purchase. But they often remember how we made them feel. They remember whether we listened. Whether we looked up. Whether we laughed together. Whether they could receive our attention when something mattered to them. Presence tells another person: “You matter enough for me to be here with you.” ⚙️ Simple Family Stewardship Systems The Family Phone Basket Choose one meal or family activity. Everyone places their phone in a basket before it begins—including the adults. Phones are not the enemy. The goal is to protect the people in front of us. A Digital Sabbath Choose one evening a week to step away from unnecessary screens. Set aside one hour each week for intentional family time. Use that time to: * cook * walk * play * talk * read * pray * create something together No complicated agenda. No pressure. Just presence. Reflection Ask yourself: * What regularly receives my best attention? * Is my family receiving my best—or what remains? * What is one digital distraction we could reduce? * What simple family rhythm could replace it? 🏡 This Week’s Family Challenge Choose one meal when everyone puts their phones away before sitting down. No scrolling. No television. No distractions. Ask: “What helps you feel most connected to our family?” Then listen. Small, faithful rhythms create strong families. 📖 Scripture Psalm 46:10 says: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Stillness makes room for us to notice God. It can also help us notice the people He has placed around us. 🤍 Closing Note Your family does not need perfect parents. It needs present ones. Strong families are not built only through major events. They are built through ordinary moments that receive intentional attention. Your family is the most important enterprise you will ever lead. Protect what matters most. 🪶 Keep Growing This Week 🎥 Watch the full Pearls of Wisdom episode on YouTube. www.youtube.com/@ThrivewithEbonySade 📝 Return to this reflection throughout the week. 🏡 Practice the Family Phone Basket or schedule a Family Connection Hour.
