If you are not following true progressive overload (same exercises weekly, tracking your reps and weight, and beating your previous numbers), you are burning calories but not creating the specific stimulus muscles need to grow. Can you build muscle in a calorie deficit? It is very difficult. Your body needs adequate protein, carbs, and total calories to build tissue. Undereating or cutting carbs removes the raw materials needed for muscle growth, which cancels out even a well-designed training program.
