Learning To Say No (Expectations Part 2)
Perspectives from Staff in Academia
On this week's episode of Raw Academia: Unfiltered and Real we discuss interactions of a staff member with the academic community. This week's special guest is Greg Bunton, who spent 45 years on the CSULB campus working as a staff member. He spent time in landscaping, grounds crews, Kinesiology staff, equipment room, and a little bit of everywhere else. During his time at CSULB, he’s had some good experiences, and some bad experiences. Today we’re going to explore the dynamic between the staff and how they really help keep the faculty afloat.
Avoiding Burnout
On kickoff episode for Season 2 of Raw Academia: Unfiltered and Real, Dr. Valenzuela and Dr. Boyer discuss tips on how to avoid burnout in your job. We discuss personal experiences in which burnout happened for us, what led to it, and what helped us rediscover the joy in our jobs to come out of that feeling of burnout.
Student Evaluations
On this week's episode, Dr. Valenzuela and Dr. Boyer discuss end of the semester student evaluations. Student evaluations are something EVERY faculty member must endure and we have had our fair share of both constructive feedback and some not-so-savory comments from students. We discuss some of the literature examining the effectiveness of students evaluations, our own experiences with them, and some advice on how to handle them.
Internships
On today's episode, we talk about the wide world of student internships and the fun stories we hear regarding those (good and bad). Joining us today is Dr. Portia Resnick, an assistant professor in the masters of athletic training program at CSULB. She provides first hand experience and insight into how to handle internships and clinical sites with students.
