Descripción

In the latest episode of our Religious Trauma series, we wanted to get to the bottom of where the idea of gender roles came from. We were curious as to why so many Christians have an understanding of gender roles that tends to be oppressive to women; we figured those ideas had to come from somewhere These ideas, then influenced the early church fathers, the early church fathers influenced the reformers, and the reformers influenced modern-day theologians. Keeping up Appearances

This marks Episode 1 of our new series on religious trauma. **TRIGGER WARNING**  We’re going to be covering some pain points that have contributed (and continue to contribute) to religious trauma. We’ll cover the origin of those topics, what form they still take in the church today, and we’ll even have some bonus episodes with guest co-hosts. Some of the things you can expect in this series: the emphasis on outward appearance (this episode), diet/SDA health message, gender roles and obsession with hierarchy, the psychology behind religious trauma, and more.  Show notes/sources for this episode * The intersection of outward appearance and theology * Dress Reform: mentioned in video, as well as good sources for additional reading * https://www.ministrymagazine.org/archive/1938/08/dress-reform-counselsno.-2 [https://www.ministrymagazine.org/archive/1938/08/dress-reform-counselsno.-2] * http://www.remnantraiment.com/subpages/history.htm [http://www.remnantraiment.com/subpages/history.htm] * https://m.egwwritings.org/en/book/116.2416#2416 [https://m.egwwritings.org/en/book/116.2416#2416] * https://www.nonegw.org/canright/can19.htm [https://www.nonegw.org/canright/can19.htm] * https://www.present-truth.org/13-Character/When%20God%20Asked%20Women.pdf [https://www.present-truth.org/13-Character/When%20God%20Asked%20Women.pdf] * http://www.sabbatismos.com/bible-studies-on-ellen-white/2nd-pillar-faithfulness-to-scripture/cq15-dress-reform-vision/#sthash.ldGfKvzp.IutAwMvM.dpbs [http://www.sabbatismos.com/bible-studies-on-ellen-white/2nd-pillar-faithfulness-to-scripture/cq15-dress-reform-vision/#sthash.ldGfKvzp.IutAwMvM.dpbs] * https://m.egwwritings.org/en/book/1455.2#2 [https://m.egwwritings.org/en/book/1455.2#2] * https://m.egwwritings.org/en/book/756.1024#1024 [https://m.egwwritings.org/en/book/756.1024#1024] * A stumbling block: weaponizing Scripture * Romans 14:10-13 * Romans 14:1 * 1 Corinthians 8:4-10 * The Tyranny of the Weaker Brother: https://www.ministrymagazine.org/archive/2012/11/the-tyranny-of-the-weaker-brother [https://www.ministrymagazine.org/archive/2012/11/the-tyranny-of-the-weaker-brother]  * Matthew 23:27-28 * Jesus was clearly interested in what is in our hearts- the inner self vs the outer appearance. One can “check off all the boxes” of what they think a Christian is supposed to “look like” but can be misrepresenting Christ with how they treat others, etc. Then this thought can also be weaponized.

Ellen White vs Sola Scriptura

Is the Seventh-day Adventist Church protestant or not? Why do our members find it so easy to resort to cult mentality when it comes to EGW? We'll cover this here on our final episode of our Ellen White series! Sources/Show Notes -18th fundamental belief -Full list of fundamental beliefs https://www.adventist.org/beliefs/  -Statement of Confidence in the Writings of Ellen G. White, 2015  https://www.adventist.org/official-statements/statement-of-confidence-in-the-writings-of-ellen-g-white/ -2015 General Conference Session meeting minutes  Document 1 https://documents.adventistarchives.org/Minutes/GCSM/2015/GCST20150707AM.pdf Document 2 https://documents.adventistarchives.org/Minutes/GCSM/2015/GCST20150706PM.pdf In its current configuration, the Adventist Church is a cult, and will continue to be one as long as they play fast and loose with Sola Scriptura. It is not too late to change, and this reformation is what we should strive for
