In this special episode, editor Mickey Conlon is joined by associate editor Quinton Amundson and reporter Luke Mandato for a conversation with Jesuit Father John O’Brien, director of the Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario. Fr. O’Brien discusses the dual anniversaries being marked in 2026, seen in the 100th anniversary of the Martyrs’ Shrine and the 400th anniversary of St. Jean de Brébeuf’s arrival in the Hurons. The team explores the Shrine’s busy season, the deep spiritual impact of pilgrimages, the lasting fruits of St. John Paul II’s 1984 visit, and the inspiring witness of Joseph Chiwatenhwa and his wife Marie Aonetta. The conversation also covers the new commemorative magazine Missions and Martyrs (a collaboration between the Shrine and The Catholic Register), special keepsakes including a commemorative coin and photo book, and an exciting documentary project with filmmaker Kevin Dunn. Fr. O’Brien shares what visitors can expect this year at the Shrine, including Masses and spiritual programming, and invites pilgrims to come and experience this historic site.
