Descripción

Have you ever said something that landed completely differently than you intended? Maybe you meant to come across as warm and confident — but something got lost in translation. It wasn't what you said. It was how you said it. After 18 years as a vocal coach working with award-winning performers, executives, and entrepreneurs, I've learned that your voice is a live broadcast of your internal world. And if you want to communicate with greater intention and clarity, the real work starts on the inside. In this episode, I introduce a framework I call Vocal Tells — the subtle, often subconscious patterns in the way we speak that reveal far more than our words alone. I walk you through 6 categories of vocal tells, what they might be communicating to the people around you, and what they could be pointing to beneath the surface. The 6 categories covered in this episode: 🔹 Shrinking Tells — making yourself smaller 🔹 Permission Seeking Tells — handing your authority to the listener 🔹 Validation Seeking Tells — needing confirmation to feel okay 🔹 Survival Tells — your voice in fight or flight 🔹 Flatlining Tells — compartmentalizing emotion to maintain control 🔹 Armoring Tells — using your voice as a shield This episode is your starting point for awareness. Because awareness is the beginning of everything. You think you're being clear. But research shows that the more you over-explain, the less people trust what you're saying — and the more your authority quietly leaks out of every over-qualified sentence. In this episode, I break down the real psychology behind why so many high achievers fall into the over-explaining trap, why it backfires, and one specific skill you can start building today to communicate with more clarity and confidence. Here's what we cover: - Why being more experienced doesn't make you less likely to over-explain - The psychology term that explains the compulsion to cover every blind spot - What listeners actually think when you over-explain (it's not what you hope) - Why the solution isn't under-explaining — it's distillation - A game from the world of improv theater that builds this skill in a surprisingly fun way Chapters: 0:00 Intro – The Over-Explaining Trap 0:57 Welcome to the Resonate Podcast 1:22 My Story: Over-Explaining as a Vocal Coach 3:11 Why We Over-Explain: Epistemic Anxiety 4:48 How Over-Explaining Backfires 7:37 What to Do: The Skill of Distillation 10:30 The Half Life Game (from Improv Theater) 11:21 Half Life in Action: The Devil Wears Prada 13:07 Try It Yourself 14:07 Closing & Book Recommendation 14:33 Outro About the Resonate Podcast Hosted by Krystal Diaz — vocal coach, performance coach, and author of The Empowered Voice. Read the Room: How to Walk Into Any Room and Actually Feel Like You Belong

Have you ever walked into a room full of people you don't know and felt completely out of sync — like everyone else got a memo you didn't? You're not bad with people. You just haven't learned this skill yet. In this episode, I share what I learned from years of performing and coaching high achievers about one of the most underrated social skills out there — and introduce you to a Korean concept called Nunchi (눈치): the art of reading the room. I also walk you through the R.O.O.M. Framework — a simple, practical tool you can use at your very next social event so you stop dreading the room and start actually feeling like you belong in it. What you'll learn in this episode: What Nunchi is and why high achievers often struggle with it How Nunchi goes beyond emotional intelligence What bunwigi (분위기) means and why it matters The R.O.O.M. Framework: Register, Observe, Open Your Mind, Mirror or Lead Why your inner critic is the real thing standing between you and genuine connection 📖 Get my book — The Empowered Voice: Quiet Your Inner Critic, Speak Your Truth, and Share Your Gifts 👉 https://krystaldiaz.com/the-empowered-voice/ When you get your copy, you'll find bonus resources designed to help you apply these tools so you can overcome the blocks holding back your communication, your confidence, and your ability to show up as your most authentic self. ⏱ Episode Chapters 0:00 Introduction – The party problem 0:31 Growing up performing but still lost offstage 1:08 What this episode is about: reading the room 1:26 Welcome & host intro 1:55 What is nunchi?
