Like many returning veterans, he likely transitioned back into civilian life after several years of intense wartime service overseas. This area was strategically important because it contained vital oil resources that had been seized by Japan early in the war. Allied air operations targeted Japanese supply lines, airfields, and naval installations throughout the archipelago. Participation in campaigns in both New Guinea and the Netherlands East Indies indicates that Reedy’s unit was involved in the broader Allied push westward across the Pacific. World War Two in the Pacific Theater means having to get creative with your allies, your whiskey smuggling, and your strategy for avoiding getting eaten by a crocodile. 😱🤮 Campaigns in New Guinea One of the areas in which Reedy served was New Guinea, a central battleground of the Pacific War. Allied air units operating there conducted bombing raids against Japanese bases, provided close air support to ground troops fighting in dense jungle terrain, and transported supplies to remote forward airfields. The New Guinea campaign was critical to the Allied strategy of “island hopping,” which aimed to isolate major Japanese strongholds while advancing toward the Philippines and the Japanese home islands.
