Series 19 - From Copilot to Agent: When Enterprise AI Stops Suggesting and Starts Acting
The financial copilot is the dominant form of enterprise AI deployment in finance today. It sits alongside the finance professional, observes the work, generates suggestions, surfaces anomalies, drafts outputs — and then waits. The human reviews the suggestion, approves or modifies it, and takes the action. The AI does the thinking. The human does the doing. This is a genuinely useful capability. It is not, however, the capability that the most forward-looking finance functions are building toward. The autonomous finance agent does not wait. It operates within a defined scope — a set of processes, a set of decision rules, a set of escalation thresholds — and it executes. It reconciles the intercompany position and posts the correcting entry. It identifies the anomalous transaction, investigates the supporting documentation, and flags it for human review with a complete audit trail already assembled. It monitors the compliance position across every active jurisdiction and initiates the submission when the conditions are met, without waiting for a human to open the dashboard and press the button. The brief this episode makes is structural: the move from copilot to agent is not a software update. It is an architectural transition that requires three things the copilot deployment does not: a data foundation clean enough that the agent can trust what it reads, a decision framework clear enough that the agent knows what it is authorised to do, and a governance model explicit enough that the CFO can attest to outcomes produced by a system that operated without human approval at each step. Most organisations have deployed copilots because the copilot deployment did not require these three things. Building toward agents requires them — and building them is the work that the copilot era should have been preparing finance functions to do.
