Not only did Jesus teach His disciples a lesson that they would remember for a lifetime, but so did the despised Canaanite woman by her noble humility and her generous willingness to sacrifice herself for her daughter. While Jesus’ disciples thought only of their own comfort and reputation, the Canaanite woman considered no insult or humiliation too great, because all she cared about was that her beloved daughter would be healed.

Just as the people of Israel were delivered from slavery in Egypt through the waters of the Red Sea, so sinful humanity is delivered from the slavery of sin, evil, and death by passing through the waters of baptism. Saint Paul says that those who are baptized have died and been buried with Christ, and have been raised with Him from the dead, so that they may «walk in newness of life».

It is not easy to admit this. Who among us would want to admit that even if he were wealthy and in good health, he would still be nothing more than a blind beggar. Blind because sin has robbed us of the supernatural ability to see God who is our true light and life, and beggars because «we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out».

Using the image of today’s Gospel, we can say that we are not only the sowers, but we are the seed that God wants to be sown – everywhere in the world, so that there will be as many as possible those whose ears and hearts will be touched by the saving message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We must sow the word of God everywhere, and we must be ready to be sown everywhere. There are so many thirsty souls around us – even if they themselves do not know what they are thirsting for.
