Episode 2: When AI Hurts: The Character.AI Lawsuit and What It Means for Families

Welcome to the Social Media Justice Podcast. I’m Matt Bergman, the founder of the Social Media Victims Law Center. Today, we’re going to tackle one of the most urgent and unsettling developments in online safety: the growing danger of AI chatbots—and  the wrongful death cases and personal injury cases we’ve recently filed against Character.AI, one of the leading purveyors of these dangerous social media chatbots. I’m joined by my friend, colleague, and nationally recognized expert on social media harm, attorney Laura Marquez-Garrett. Together, we’ll explore how these chatbots are being used by teens, why they’ve become so addictive and influential, and what happens when an AI crosses the line from a useful tool to a clear and present danger to the safety of our kids. We’ll also discuss the legal strategies involved, what parents can do if they believe a chatbot may be harming their child, and the best path forward in these situations.
