Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor Training Watch Full Video Episode [https://youtu.be/nOHnPUZoLcg] In this episode, I take on a question that sits at the intersection of economics, history, and something older than both. Should your automotive service facility be open seven days a week? What about Saturdays? And if you stagger the schedule so everyone still gets their days off, is that good enough? I introduce the concept of the network good, the economic principle that a shared day of rest is worth fundamentally more than a private one, and trace it through one of history's stranger experiments: Joseph Stalin's 1929 attempt to replace the seven-day week with a continuous rotating workweek. He had total industrial authority and a radical design. The thing he was trying to replace proved more durable than his system. We also spend some time with Thomas Cahill's “Hingest of History” series investigating the origins of western thought. Beyond that, you'll even learn a few Russian words, as I found it fascinating how their language had built in, deep meaning that no regime could undo. I hope you enjoy this thought provoking topic, and as a takeaway from this episode, that you will consider carefully the potential consequences for all of your team members before you make a decision on your hours for the weekend. The Word of the Day: Synchrony (noun): The state of occurring or existing at the same time. From the Greek syn (together) and chronos (time). Synchrony is not merely simultaneity. It carries the idea of shared time, time that belongs to a group rather than an individual. Sincerely, Craig O'Neill References * Alex Mayyasi, "Why Weekends Are Under Threat," The Hustle. The No Shared Urgency Spiral Culture Crisis [E098]

Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor Training Watch Full Video Episode [https://youtu.be/_Zd4dHyHEBs] In our episode today, We explore what happens when a team attempts to adopt change without shared urgency from leadership. Using the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM) as our framework, we walk through the load-bearing rungs of the change adoption ladder, name the six personal objections that keep people stuck at the personal rung, meet the four team archetypes present in any change initiative, and trace the stages by which a facility's most committed change agent is quietly worn away when leadership does not carry the flag. Word of the Day: Attrition. Noun. The process of reducing something through sustained pressure or gradual wearing down, without direct confrontation. The six personal objections: Identity threat. Authority resistance. Perceived cost. Loss of informal power. Delegated accountability without authority. Owner ambiguity. The four behavior types: The quitter, the antagonist, the mercenary, and the crusader. Most of us have been all four at different points in our careers. Your culture is determined by the worst behavior that management tolerates. Shared urgency is not a personality trait. It is a leadership responsibility. This episode was inspired by a topic that I'm working with George Kingman on at Advanced Shop Leadership, where I'll be conducting a workshop on June 5 and 6. If these topics are intriguing to you, please reach out, I’d love to chat, and we'll let you know the next chance you have to join us for a live workshop. In workshops we dive further into topics like these. Thanks for listening! Is Altruism Real? [E097]

Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor Training Watch Full Video Episode [https://youtu.be/XxJ9YxkcCFM] In this episode, I take on a question that was thrust upon me at one of those (too) late night industry gatherings. I suspect you have either been asked directly or have quietly wondered yourself: is altruism even real? Or is every act of generosity, sacrifice, and service ultimately just self-interest in disguise? This episode attempts to resolve that centuries old debate in 15 to 20 minutes! Okay, maybe not fully resolved…. we will take a quick look at the surface arguments and I’ll make a few points about how our perspective on this question probably does have implications on how we lead and communicate with others. I’ll look at a few simple bullets from a couple of old philosophers (no, not Matt Fanslow), Thomas Hobbes (who championed self interest views), Joseph Butler (who argued against Hobbes). And a few more thinkers like C.S. Lewis, Dale Carnegie, and John Locke. We also connect this to the key principle introduced in earlier episodes: Dale Carnegie's point that there is no neutral exchange. Every interaction leaves the other person a little better or a little worse. That principle, it turns out, has some very old and very serious philosophical even theological company. My hope is that this episode will spawn some deep thinking on your part, and be a little bit of fun along the way and equip you well for the next time you find yourself at a conference (too) late at night, conversing with friends! Sincerely, Craig O'Neill Word of the Day Altruism (noun): The selfless concern for the wellbeing of others. OnRamp: Cascading Car Failures (Part 2)[E096]

Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor Training Watch Full Video Episode [https://youtu.be/KRA_-fCNjHE] In our episode today, I continue the story I started in episode 095. Three vehicles effectively compromised in a week and a half, while I'm in the middle of helping to launch a ministry for people whose lives come undone when their transportation does. You can’t make this stuff up. The 2026 used car market is not kind, and learning that firsthand with 20 years of automotive knowledge behind me gave me an even deeper understanding of what OnRamp's work actually costs and why it matters. The word of the day is solidarity. Standing with people, not from a distance, not in principle only — but close enough to feel what they feel. My goal with this episode is only to share this story. And if anything else comes from it, like maybe we just absorb to help edify ourselves, so that we can communicate from a position of understanding. Thanks for listening! OnRamp: A Worthy Cause (Part 1) [E095]

Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor Training Watch Full Video Episode [https://youtu.be/2mrUHvhxsno] In this episode, I begin a two-part story about how I have been led to begin working toward a local pilot of OnRamp, a faith-based ministry that gifts reliable vehicles and ongoing support to hard-working people who need transportation to take their next step toward self-sufficiency. The how of this story matters as much as the what. A truancy letter, three bullet points, a network built over 20 years, and a vehicle giveaway in a Dallas at Golden Rule Auto Care all flowed together at the similar moments. The word of the day: Confluence. A flowing together of two or more streams. The point where separate things meet and move as one. I hope you enjoy this story, as the story is really the point of the episode, and your takeaways will have to be from anything you feel about the experiences that I'm sharing. There are so many other parts to this story coming together, I could write a book on it, but I think you’ll enjoy this two part series, and the personal lessons I share as a result of my experiences.
