Surf Report - Ocean City MD Beaches
Good morning, this is your Monday beach forecast for Virginia and the Outer Banks. If you're thinking about heading to the water today, listen up because conditions are going to be pretty dynamic out there. Starting with the Maryland beaches around Ocean City and Assateague, we've got a Beach Hazards Statement in effect all day, and rip currents are running high. We're talking three to five foot surf with south winds pumping fifteen to twenty miles per hour. Water temperature is sitting in the lower seventies, which should feel pretty refreshing. It's going to be partly sunny with highs in the lower eighties, but here's the thing—that UV index is very high, so sunscreen is absolutely non-negotiable today. The real concern is those rip currents. They're likely in the surf zone, so if you're getting in the water, know how to identify them and know how to escape them by swimming parallel to shore. Moving down to the Accomack and Northampton areas including Chincoteague and the barrier islands, you're looking at basically the same setup. High rip current risk with three to five foot surf, south winds fifteen to twenty, mostly sunny skies, and highs in the lower eighties. Water temperature is also in the lower seventies. Again, another Beach Hazards Statement is in effect through this evening. Those rip currents are no joke, so exercise extreme caution if you're venturing into the water. Now, Virginia Beach and Sandbridge are seeing slightly different conditions. Here we've got a moderate rip current risk instead of high, with two to four foot surf. But don't let that fool you into thinking it's dramatically calmer. South winds are around ten miles per hour this morning but will increase to around twenty in the afternoon. Highs are creeping up into the upper eighties, and the heat index could touch one hundred degrees. Water temperature is a touch cooler at mid seventies. The sun is intense out there with that very high UV index. Heading down to the Outer Banks in Currituck, we're back to moderate rip current risk with two to four foot surf. South winds start around ten and ramp up to twenty in the afternoon. Upper eighties for highs, but here's where it gets toasty—the heat index could reach up to one hundred three degrees. Water temperature is mid seventies. It's mostly sunny and beautiful, but that heat is going to be something to contend with. Looking ahead to Tuesday, conditions are moderating across the board. Rip current risk drops to moderate or low depending on where you are. Surf heights ease back to two to three feet. We'll see partly sunny skies with a chance of showers and thunderstorms developing, particularly as the day goes on. Southwest to northwest winds around ten miles per hour. Highs in the mid to upper eighties, but that heat index is still climbing, potentially reaching one hundred to one hundred five in the Outer Banks. If you're planning a Tuesday beach day, the water should be a bit friendlier than today. Wednesday looks stellar for beach time. Sunny skies across the board, surf heights around two feet, and highs in the upper seventies to lower eighties. Northeast winds around five to ten miles per hour keeping things comfortable. Thursday continues the nice trend with sunny skies, minimal two foot surf, and highs in the lower to mid eighties. Light winds around ten miles per hour from the south to southeast. Friday brings a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms back into the picture, but overall it'll be mostly sunny. Two foot surf, highs in the low to mid eighties, and south winds around ten miles per hour. So here's the bottom line for today: if you're heading to the beach, respect those rip currents, especially in Maryland and the northern Virginia beaches. Wear your sunscreen because that UV index is relentless. Stay hydrated in that heat. The water's going to be refreshing but the air is going to be toasty. Conditions improve significantly starting tomorrow, so if today feels too dicey, waiting twenty four hours might be worth it. Have a great beach day and stay safe out there.
