Episode 1 - How does Addiction impact the Aging Process ?

In this episode , we will explore the topic of Addiction as it relates to the aging process. We first discuss the medical definition of Addiction so that we can set some expectations as to what constitutes an addiction . There are two types of addiction categories according to the DSM. The first is substance related addictions. These include drugs and alcohol as well as prescriptions and house hold chemicals. The second way the DSM describes addiction are behavioral addictions. These consist of gambling, pornography, social media , internet , shopping , and kleptomania ( obsessive stealing). However , the DSM also classifies an addiction as any behavior that is repetitive in nature which produces an negative consequence or outcome despite repeating it over and over again expecting a different result each time this behavior is repeated. Isn't that the definition of insanity ? Hmm. interesting ? We present solutions for adapting to your addictions as well as techniques and strategies to replace your unhealthy habits with positive ones. We also discuss the impacts addiction has on our mind and body. Please click on the links below to learn more about how addictions are classified and diagnosed.  Highlights  * Accelerated aging happens when biological age outpaces chronological age * In addiction the early-onset of comorbid diseases remains mostly undetected * Oxidation, inflammation, stress hormones may lead to telomere attrition expediting aging * Cognitive decline in addiction maybe attributed to an increase in amyloid.  If you or an addicted loved one have questions about addiction, intervention, or treatment, please feel free to reach out to SAMHSA.
