The Ascended King Reigns

For the Sake of the Truth

In the Second Letter of John, the elder encourages and exhorts the elect lady and her children to hold fast to and walk in the truth in the face of deception. I. The elder greets and encourages the believers, emphasizing the primacy of the truth. (v. 1-3) II. The elder encourages the believers to act in obedience to the truth. (v. 4-6) III. The elder warns the believers to guard against deceivers and hold fast to the truth. (v. 7-11) A. He warns them not to depart from the truth, but to abide in the teachings of Christ. (v. 7-9) B. He warns them against fellowshipping with the false teachers. (v. 10-11) IV. The elder encourages the believers with a promised visit and greetings. (v. 12-13)

The Ascended King Reigns

In Luke 24:50–53, Luke concludes his Gospel by reminding us that the ascended Christ reigns as King and therefore deserves the joyful worship and obedience of His people. I. Because the risen King blesses His disciples and ascends to heaven… (vv. 50–51) A. They worship Him with joy (v. 52). B. They serve Him with joy (v. 53). II. Luke concludes with the disciples' response to the ascended King so that… A. We have certainty about the things we have been taught: 1. The person of Christ 2. The passion of Christ 3. The promises of Christ B. We must respond appropriately to the ascended King.

The Risen King and His Witnesses

In Luke 24:36–49, the risen King reveals that His death and resurrection fulfill God's redemptive plan, and this gospel must be proclaimed to all nations. I. The Risen King Confirms His Resurrection (vv. 36–43) A. Jesus appears to His disciples and dispels their fears (vv. 36–40). B. Jesus demonstrates the reality of His resurrection (vv. 41–43). II. The Risen King Commissions His Witnesses (vv. 44–49) A. Jesus opens the disciples' minds as He explains the Scriptures (vv. 44–47). B. Jesus commissions and prepares His disciples for mission (vv. 48–49).
