The Sermon on the Mount is the most famous message ever given. As a westerner 2,000 years later the cultural understanding is lost to many of us. In the first episode in this series, we lay the historical backdrop of what lead up to the message Jesus gave beginning in Matthew chapter 5. Beginning with Alexander the Great we journey through time as we learn of the spread of Greek influence, the rise of Antiochus IV, the Maccabean revolt, the rise of the Sadducees, Pharisees, and Essenes, the emergence of John the Baptist, and the significance of the Beatitudes. The visuals in this episode are designed to be engaging, and allow those watching to be immersed in the story as it unfolds.

Before You Worship… Fix This First (Matthew 5) - The Bible Unpacked EP.4

What did Jesus really mean in Matthew 5? In this episode, we unpack Matthew 5:21–30 and dive deep into Jesus’ teaching on anger, reconciliation, lust, adultery of the heart, and the true standard of the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus doesn’t just address outward behavior like murder and adultery — He goes straight to the heart. He exposes the progression from anger to contempt, from lust to internal adultery, and shows us why reconciliation matters so deeply to God. We explore: * Why “But I say to you” was a radical authority claim * The progression from anger → insult → reputation destruction * What Jesus meant by being “liable to judgment” * The real meaning behind “settle quickly with your adversary” * Why reconciliation is tied to worship * How debt language connects to sin and forgiveness * The story of Joseph as a prophetic backdrop * Why Jesus isn’t being literal about gouging out your eye * The role of the Holy Spirit in living the Christ-like life This isn’t just about moral behavior. It’s about heart transformation. Jesus sets the highest ideal — not to crush us, but to reveal our need for the Spirit and the grace of God. If you’ve struggled with anger, bitterness, lust, offense, or reconciliation — this teaching will challenge and encourage you.
